DISTRICT COMPETITION RESULTS OF WEEK-END MATCHES Under ideal weather conditions the Saturday and Sunday competitions of the West Coast Cricket Association were advanced a further stage during the week-end. In the Saturday competition United and Old Boys’ were successful, while in the A. Division of the Sunday competition, United A. continued their run of victories, and Marist and Cobden B. were also successful. Kumara, Camerons and Kamaka each secured a win in the B. Diylsioh. Technical B team, and Marist each obtained a victory in the tijird grade competition. Results at a glance were: — SATURDAY COMPETITION Old Boys beat Cobden, 2 pts. United beat Star, 3 pts. THIRD GRADE Marist beat 'Jech. Old Boys, 3 pts. Tech. B. beat Tech. A, 2 pts. “A” DIVISION Cobden B, beat Runanga, 3 pts. United A beat United, B, 2pts. Star beat Brunner, 2 pts. Marlsts beat Cobden A, 2 pts. “B” DIVISION Kumara beat Marist, 3 pts. Camerons beat Runanga, 3 pts. . Kamaka beat Brunner, 3 pts. WEAK. FIELDING BEATS COBDEN If ever a team had a match in its keeping only to throw away opportunity and suffer defeat, Cobden A did yesterday, in the match against Marist at Omoto. They had everything in their favour, and everything to blame themselves for when, at the conclusion of play, Marist emerged

winners, by 16 runs in a one-innings match. Batting first on a wicket which was bumping badly due to the fact that it had not received any. at- ' tention since last it was played on, Cobden placed 61 on the board before Mclntosh lost W, Barlow. Wickets then fell quickly and the moderate score of 122 signalled the dismissal of the side. W. Barlow batted confidently, and appeared to be well set for a big score when Cornish scattered his wicket at 33. Mclntosh was the only other batsman to show any form, his 23 being secured by . patient cricket. Adams (12) and Smith (10) were the only other double-figure scorers. The fielding o.’ Marist was generally good, but the absence of a long stop resulted in

five boundaries being secured from byes, of which the total, including a wdie, reached 27. Carr was the best bowler he tempting five batsmen to lift for a catch. The Cobden total did not appear to offer anything formidable for Marist, but early and continued disaster was met with. But for the assistance given through dropped catches bv Cobden, Marist must have been dismissed for a very small total. It would be difficult to confdently name

a Cobden player who did not drop a catch, but Edwards may have been the exception. The easiest of chances were missed, and while almost every Marjst batsman gave a chance in thit way, Cofnish was the only one to be' dismissed in such a manner. Morris and Bayley opened, Morris going l.b.w. to Knapp when the total was 14. Thereafter until the sixth wicket, a Marist player was dismissed after about every five runs, six wickets being down for 40. Noel Bayley was the only batsman to offer any resistance to''Knapp who was bowling

exceedingly well; but Bayley, while not detracting in any way from the valuable stand he made, was on two occasions let off by the weak efforts at catches. He gave an easy chance when 8, and another later when ia the twenties, but thereafter never looked like being dismissed, and carried hia bat through the innings fur a splendid and much needed 84. His brother, F, Bayley was the only other batsman to reach double figures. This pair made 49 for the seventh Wicket, and by collaring the bowling on every possible occasion N. Bayley carried the day for his team. His score of 84 not out, included eleven fours, and one six. Knapp bowle 1 splendidly, and had his fieldsmen accepted the chances of catches off his bowling his figures must have beei greatly bettered, and Cobden must

have won. Knapp took seven wickets at a cost of 31 runs. In scoring 138 Marist gained a two-pointer bv 16 runs. Scores: — Cobden A: —Mclntosh, c Morris, b Carr 23; W. RUNANGA TWICE FAIL Runanga collapsed in both innings when facing the bowling of Dewar, James, ,and Pike. They were dismissed for the small total of 40 in the first strike, and in their second innings again failed, being all out for 36. Dewar (6 for 23), James (4 for 6), in the first innings, and Pike (8 for 22) in the second innings, played havoc with the Runpnga batsmen. Cobden B. fielded 10 men, and in batting made 84, which was sufficient to gain for them a three points win. Scores: —

After losing their first two matches, Star scored a victory in their third, when they gained a two-pointer over Brunner yesterday at Brunner by 30 runs on the first innings. Having first strike Brunner met steady bowling from the opposing side, and were dismissed for the small score of 56. Star commenced their innings well, but after the dismissal of Cooper and Kerr, the remaining Star batsmen failed against Loubere and Kennedy, the team being all out for 86. Brunner did splendidly in their second strike, D. Kennedy, who was having his last game prior to his transfer to Christchurch, giving an excellent display by scoring 68 before retiring unbeaten. Brunner declared with seven wickets down for 153, but left time too short to dispose of Star, who did not respond too strongly, and at the call for drawing of stumps had lost five wickets for 32 runs. UNITED A BEAT UNITED B.

The bowling of Casey, Restieaux, and Anderson proved too strong for United B at the Karoro Sports ground yesterday, and the team scored only 95. McDonald with 25, and extras 29, supplied the best figures. United A replied with a score of 176, to which nr. Grooby contributed 65 not out, carrying his bat right through the innings. Apart from G. Kear the other batsmen were not impressive. With six wickets down for 55, it looked likely that United A would find difliculty in reaching the 95 scored by the opposition, but Tomkies, Kear and Hughes batted well to assist Grooby in taking the score to 176. United A gained two points, winning on the first innings by 81 runs. Baldwin and Gilbert bowled best for the losing team. Scores:

Sandman, and C. Restieaux (secretary) being also present. It was resolved to notify the Runanga Club (hat W. Sharp is an unfinancial member of the United Club, .and as such, is ineligible to play for an affiliated club until he becomes a financial member of United. A ruling was asked for by the Camerons Club as to how many runs should be given for a ball, which in the opinion of players would . have reached the boundary had it not been Obstructed by a set of harrows.
