DERBY DAY AT RICCARTON. HOW THE EVENTS WERE WON. [special to “stab.”] CHRISTCHURCH, November 9. The Canterbury Jockey Club was again' fdvbured with, pleasant weather foi 1 , of its Cup carnival to-driy. There was a good attendance for.ari off day. But as is the rrifijat present', money appeared to be scriirdd, brid with only seven races on the programme the figures would not be coiripardble with those for the corday last year. . There was very li'ttld .of tlie rough element, that was in evidence on the opening day. LANDMARK'S SECOND HURDLES. Landmark and Gourmet (coupled) wei^. f pnly fpurth in demand in the Middletori HuVdl'e Handicap, the reason being that, the shorter course as compared with that of Saturday, was in favppr.jof, .Captain’s Gift and Quinopal, jyhile the newcomer, Camisader, was also entrusted with *nore money than the topweiglif. As on Saturday, Captain’s Gift, went to the front early and essayed' to' win all" the way. Turning for home Landmark and Quinopal mpVd'ft hß : to hirii, arid iri a good finish Ldndhiaflr bbatj trie, favourite by threeof a‘ length, with Quinopal a clehr length’ behind Captain's Gift. Landmark has been up for a long time, arid tlioifgli he won, he had no taste fo'f the business in the last two furlongs? He Ifurig in badly and though he did not touch' Quiridpal, he made the latter coriie out from the fence, otherwise. Quiiiopal might have been a little closer up at the post. Morena strucK-the sec.bnd fepce and unseated I. Tilsdrit.., 'jhig gelding is new to the game,,, and v with , a little experience will be more than useful amongst the Jumpers. He is’held on lease by his trainer, F. D. Jones. HAS THE FAMILY SPEED. The nineteen two-year-olds that went to the ppst, for_,the Irwell Handicap were a hide ibbkirig lot. Posy and Splutter were much more strongly supported- .than' anything else arid they were always in the fighting line. Posy showed Up first from a good start (except .that Merry Ruler swung round as the tapes, went up), but coming to the course proper Oratorious took charge from Posy, .Splutter and Mister Quex, who were the fnost prominent of the others .order. These four were battling it out in the last furlong, pelice and Silver Streak appear- , of the course. In an interesting finis’ll Oratorious increased, h i a ft.y?, nta ?V ip. a ’..length, while Delice beat .Posy by a head, jVlthJ.lftdtfer.ariother half length away, r tiy Sliver, Streak, Mister Quex arid Tout l e Monde. and this filly will be hard over a little longer journeys than half a mile. Neith[er Tout le. Monde nbr Mister Quex [were knocked about from th distance I post when., they had little chance of catching foe leaders. Tout le Monde, of ’these two, will improve most by the outing. Splutter and Posy were not disgraced, though both would probably be. playing second to the two who finished in front of them if they met again. »

PROTEST NOT SUSTAINED. Croupier was another warm favourite beaten in the Criterion Handicap. He sfet a very strong pace from the jump and at the turn for home Spoon f Great Star, Shatter and Autopay were at intervals behind him. Spoon passed him at the distance, but ran away from the whip and, though she check; ed Croupier, she got the worst of the deal. Had she gone straight she would have won easily. As it was, Croupier gathered himself up quickly and Spoon only just won, a head separating them. , A protest against the winner [was not sustained. Full Feather, now trained at Wairiiate, ran a very fine nice He looked a bit on the big side and was well'back at the turn for home. In the run in, however, he .showed all his old, dash and got up in time to snatch third money froin Nightmare and Chhrmeuse, though over two lengths behind Croiipier. Full Feather will be very hard to beat later in the meeting. The time was only a fraction outside the Australasian record, and with the weight she will get Spoon will find it hard to win again at the meeting. The topweights, Autopay and Cimabue, had every chance, but ? the pace early in the race, with their, ■weights, was too much for them. Of the two, Cimabue was doing best at the finish. POOR FINISH IN DERBY.

Bronze Eagle was favourite for the Derby with a fair call over King Colossus and Cricket Bat. On form, it was one of the most even . Derby fields seen out at Riccarton for years, and few expected to see so poor a finish. Golden Wings soon took charge, and made the pace a cracker all along the back, closely followed by Cricket Bat, Fiji, Bronze Eagle, King Colossus, arid Peter Jackson. The order was the same into the straight, and then Golden Wings and Cricket Bat shut up and Bronze Eagle asserted himself. He ran away from fhe others to win easily by four lengths. Peter Jackson was two lengths behind Fiji, with View Halloo fourth. Golden Wirigs and Cricket Bat ran themselves into the' ground, and it was not surprising that they had had enough at the end of nirie furlongs, and that the record for the race was equalled. The winner outclassed his opponents on the day, though more patiently ridden some of them might quite easily have been closer up at the finish. " Nightguard was fourth favourite, but gave his supporters' a poor run. He was last all along the back, and then met with interforeiice when he tried to improve his position at the turn. He was not further persevered with, and finished last. He rieeds time yet.

COMPRIS WINS WELL. The Fendalton Handicap was a good race between the dividend, payers, Compris and Lady Pam. These two waited, behind the front bunch, which comprised Adventus, Kahikatoa, Martion Chief, Ranelagh, Admiral Drake arid Ephialtes, to the distance, and wh’eri' they joined the leaders the race looked like being closely fought out bctWeeri all those mentioned. Then Crimpris and Lady Pam went right riwa'y, foe former winning by half a length, with a gap of three lengths to Ephialtes, who finished third sith not a' .great deal to spare from Ranelagh arid Admiral Drake. Starshooter and Black Duke were prominent early and then struck trouble. Compris was a better horse with the race into him on the first day, and Lady Pam was a little unlucky to strike him, as she beat all the remainder pointless. Kahikatoa had every chance 7 , but would be a better horse ovei’ a mile or less, and the same can be said of Epihaltes, although he rriri third.

KOROKIO ALL THE WAY. Palace was backed down to a fairly short price for the Randolph Handicap for apprentice riders. After him in the betting came Beacon Fire, Azalea and Korokio. Palace ran a good race, but was beaten into third place. After one false start, Azalea and High Tor got off badly, and Korokio went to the front to stay thereto the finish, winning by two lengths. At the turn Solitaire 11., Beacon Fite, Palace and Mistress Quickly were in behind the leader, arid at the dista, nce Jasbn’s Quest joined in. Korokiro was always going well in front, and the interest of the race lay in the battle between Jason’s Quest and Palace for second money, the verdict going to th© former by half a length. Pixie Gold made a belated run to get fourth just ahead of Beacon Fire .and Ben Hur. The lastnamed was well back early, and though prominent at the finish, never looked like troubling the placed horses, MEPRISANT’S EPSOM. i Dunraveri, Ravine and Meprisant carried the bulk of the investments in the Epsom Handicap. Adelphi was in front to the . turn from Charmaine, Taku Tama, Red Racei’ and Dunraveri, with Meprisant going easily behind them. At the distance XcSprisant and Dunraven went away, the former winding a great race by half a head, with Charmaine two lengths away, Locksley was a good fourth. Dunraven seems to liavQ cqrne solid, and was a. trifle unlucky in that his rider was prevented from using .his whip to the best advantage in the last fifty yards. He is a more likely winner than Meprisant later in the meeting. Ravine was not prominent at any stage.

METCALF’S CONDITION. CHRISTCHURCH, November 8. The condition of T. Metcalfe, a jockey who wag badly hurt when his mount, Countermarch, fell in the fiinish of the Linwood Handicap at

Riccartori on Saturday, had slightly improved to-day, but was still sbrious.

When Countermarch fell, Peter Jackson, ridden by H. Stockley, came down over him, and Sharp Thorn also lost his rider, 1.. Tilson. Metcalfe fell heavily arid was struck by the feet of the galloping horses, suffering grave head injuries, the worst being the fracture at the base of the skull. GOLDRAY TAMPERED WITH

, SYDNEY, November 9. The inquiry into whether the New Zealand horse Goldray was doped at Moorfield races on October 31 disclosed that Goldray had been tampered with, but, as a complaint was not made until after the meeting, the Stewards were unable to determine whether the doping occurred on or off the course. Therefore no action was possible.
