WARWICK’S RECOVERY
AFTER DISASTROUS START PARSONS OBTAINS CENTURY (Special to Press Association.) (Recd. August 6, 9.30 a.m.) BIRMINGHAM, August 5. New Zealand started well in the match against Warwickshire. The wicket is easy and the weather dull. New Zealand omitted Cromb, Allcott and Dempster. Lowry lost the toss. Warwickshire’s start was disastrous against Matheson and Talbot. Kemp-Welch was caught in the slips in the third over. Croom played on to an in-swinger. Wyatt was dismissed by a brilliant catch by James on the leg side. Three wickets were down for 15, but Parsons and Bates stopped the collapse. The bOwlers were hampered after the first half an hour by the greasy ball.
Play was resumed at 2.35, bad light causing a delay for 50 minutes. Parsons and Bates added 125 for the fourth wicket. Both batsmen were lucky, occasionally, in facing Matheson. . ... • Bates was caught at mid-on, attempting to force Vivian. The fifth wicket partnership between Parsons and Kilner also added 125 before Kilner snicked Blunt. A well-pitched leg-spinner from Merritt dismissed Partridge. Play closed half an hour early owing to bad light. Parsons gave an excellent display of clean driving. He used his height to advantage. He was dropped by James off Matheson when 21. Despite the greasy ball, Matheson was frequently dangerous and developed considerable pace, and occasionally made the ball rise to awkward heights. Scores: — ,

DEMPSTER FIT. LONDON, August 5. Dempster is fit and has rejoined the team. He decided not to risk playing against Warwickshire, owing to the uncertain weather. A TIMELY REMINDER. LQNDON, August 5. The paper “Sporting Life” expresses the opinion that the English victory over New Zealand in the second Test seems to have gone to the heads of certain people. The paper says it would like to see the victorious team in serious antagonism with the Woodfull combination, including Bradman, Ponsford, Kippax and Grimmett.
