COASTERS’ BOUTS. , INTERESTING DETAILS. [special to “stab.”] ASHBURTON, August 6. Lister used a nice left and right upper cut, and forced the fight against a taller and heavier opponent, winning by a good margin. He countered all Strickland’s attacks with nice snappy body punches, forced ihe fight, and had his opponent, who was considered a fair prospect for championship honours, very tired at the last bell. Croft gave away about five inches in height and twenty-four pounds weight, but dropped his opponent for eight in the first round. In the subsequent rounds he beat his big opponent badly, giving a display of pluck and fighting ability for which he was well applauded. McPhie met a seasoned x fighter and a fully developed man, who is Tommy Donovan’s sparring partner. He gave a great display of grit but could not cope with the disadvantage in strength and experience.' G. Croft may be unable to box tonight owing to a damaged rib. All the others of the Coast team are well. Lister meets a six-foot light heavyweight tip-night. Cowan meets Roebeck.
ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE.
PERCENTAGE BASIS APPROVED. ASHBURTON, August 6. The New Zealand Boxing Association’s annual meeting was opened to--day. The • President, Mr 11. D. Johnston presided. The report stated that the year began with a credit of £1770, and ended with a credit of £2028. After a long discussion the conference approved the principle that Associations bo permitted to pay professional boxers on a percentage basis, and appointed a committee to draft the necessary amendments to the rules, reporting to-morrow morning. The Conference rejected a. Whangarei remit for the examination of referees; also a Hawke’s Bay remit limiting professional contests to twelve rounds; also one from Waimate that associations in towns under 3000 of a population, pay 50 per cent, less fees to the New Zealand Association. The Conference carried a Wellington remit that at the annual meeting the associations have a vote for each permit used, and that between July 31 last and the .next annual meeting the levies to the insurance fund be suspended. One hundred pounds was granted to the Christchurch Sports Club. A request by the Napier and Hawke’s By Associations for earthquake relief was. referred to the Council for favourable consideration. The next championships were fixed at New Plymouth. The attendance was nearly 900 last night, a record for New Zealand. RECORD ATTENDANCE
In connection with attendances at amateur boxing championships, it is interesting to record that the Grey mouth Association holds the New Zealand record, which was established in 1929, on the final night of the championships, when 1200 persons paid for admission to the Town Hall, the takings being over £3OO, at low admission rates. The hall became so packed that the police refused to allow any more persons to enter, with the result that it was estimated about 400 were excluded. Greymouth established a New Zealand record for attendance, in 1921, and held it until 1929, when the Association broke its own record. Another New Zealand record was established in 1929, at the banquet which followed the conclusion of the championships, when, at 11.30 p.m. the treasifrer (Mr. L. McGlashan) presented a duly-audited balance-sheet, and handed over a cheque to the New Zealand Boxing Council. RUNANGA TOURNAMENT The Rumjnga Boxing Association decided at a meeting held last evening, to hold a tournament on Friday September 11, as a benefit for Mr. J. Garvey. Open contests and bouts for schoolboys will be arranged. Special bouts will include contests between L. Hawes, of Westport, and R. Wright, of Hokitika, and W. Hawes, of Westport, and A. McPhee, of Dobson.
