William Shelley, 77, and Oliver New-

man, 61, navvies, who were arrested at Edgware, were sentenced to death for the murder of Herbert Ayres, whose body was found on a burning refuse dump. They admitted having fought Ayres, who was taking things from their huts, but said that they had no intention of killing him. Another navvy gave evidence that he heard the fight, and saw Shelley carry the body to the dump. DESTROYER RE-FLOATED. TOKIO, July 8. Bishop Barnes, Mr. H. G. Wells, and other notables, are supporting a private Bill which is being introduced by the Commoner, Major Church, to permit sterilisation of mental defectives. The Bill provides that the doctor may perform the operation with the consent of the defective’s relatives.
