SENTENCED TO DEATH

William Shelley, 77, and Oliver New-
man, 61, navvies, who were arrested at Edgware, were sentenced to death for the murder of Herbert Ayres, whose body was found on a burning refuse dump. They admitted having fought Ayres, who was taking things from their huts, but said that they had no intention of killing him. Another navvy gave evidence that he heard the fight, and saw Shelley carry the body to the dump. DESTROYER RE-FLOATED. TOKIO, July 8. Although she had wirelessed she was breaking up, the Nadakaze was refloated yesterday. The storm is subsiding. The vessel is heavily damaged.

ANGLO RUSSIAN TRADE.

The “Daily Telegraph” lobbyist says: Mr. Johnston informed a meeting of Labourites that the Government had decided to increase the guarantees for trade with Russia to the extent of six millions for 25 years. It is understood that the credits are being provided, mainly, in respect to heavy engineering, iron and steel contracts.
STERILISING THE UNFIT
LONDON, July 8.
Bishop Barnes, Mr. H. G. Wells, and other notables, are supporting a private Bill which is being introduced by the Commoner, Major Church, to permit sterilisation of mental defectives. The Bill provides that the doctor may perform the operation with the consent of the defective’s relatives.
