COOK STRAIT SWIM
ABANDONED THIS SEASON.
[PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.]
WELLINGTON, March 20.
Although keen to make the attempt, Miss Mercedes Gleitze decided this evening that she would not set out this season on her proposed Cook Strait swim. Miss Gleitze came to this decision after a final consultation with Mr. John Tait, of Island Bay. It is likely now that Miss Gleitze will return at the beginning of 1933, when the season may be more favourable to the venture. s Mr. Tait has been studying conditions in Cook Strait so far as they are likely to affect the swim, and z he advised Miss Gleitze to abandon it at present. The water temperature today was 58 degrees, too cold for a prolonged spell in the water, and it is unlikely that the temperatures in the near future will be any warmer. Added to this, there has been a heavy swell in the Strait during the last few days. Miss Gleitze was very anxious to make the attempt to-morrow, if she possibly could, but realised after speaking to Mr. Tait that it would be a foolish enterprise.
