HOKITIKA, March 21.
The funeral of the late Mrs. Mclntosh which took place yesterday afternoon was ones of the largest seen in Hokitika. The cortege occupied almost ttie entire length of Fitzherbett Street. There Was also a large numbet of floral tokens of sympathy sent by friends and societies. The Fire Brigade (of which Mr. J. J. Mclntosh is superintendent) were present in unifprrii and representatives of other Brigades were also present. . During the prdgtesS of the furieral the firebell was tolled. The Rev. Mr. Naylor conducted the funeral rites of the Presbyterian Church'. The Warden’s Court on Wednesday again showed that attention is returning towards gold mining. There were three applications from Kumara, six from Ross and 14 from this district, all iii connection with mining, viz., prospecting areas, dams, sea beach claims etc.
Large numbers of lambs are being railed to Canterbury from this district and the carrying people will be busy for some time. One representative from Christchurch stated that he had bought upwards of 5000 around this district. Being in good condition it is satisfactory to note that the lambs brought top prices at Addington last sale day. It has been, decided to close the Earthquake Relief Fund here on Wednesday next, when it is expected the public fund will be £l5OO. This does not include sums that have been sent direct by different institutions.
