[PER PBEBS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, January 23. After a poor start, Auckland retrieved their position considerably in the Plunket Shield match against Wellington, which opened at Eden Park to-day. The first wicket fell cheaply, and after a good second wicket partnership between A. J. Postles and H. G. Vivian, the home batting slumped badly. Six wickets were down for 10!), and then G. L. Weir and A. M. Matheson were associated in a grand partnership, which saved the game for Auckland. After Matheson’s dismissal, Cleverley played “rock” for an hour while Weir attacked the bowling, and the score was taken *o 297 before the innings closed. Features of the day’s play were Weir’s great fighting innings for 122; good displays by Postles and Matheson for 59 and 54 respectively, the flawless defence of Cleverley during the ninth wicket partnership with Weir, and the astute generalship of T. C. Lowry, the Wellington .captain. When Allcott won the toss, he had no hesitation in deciding to bat. Several of the Auckland batsmen,, got themselves out, but Lowry made the most of the bowling talent at his disposal. Throughout the day he persevered with the policy of rapM changes, which was certainly justified by results. Blundell and Massey appeared Wellington’s most dangerous bowlers, but Newman, of whom much was expected, was stea,dy but not unduly difficult. The Wellington fielding was keen, and only one catch was dropped. James, behind the wickets was not at his best, and missed several stumping chances, in addition to allowing a number of byes.
