Mawson’s expedition, sailed to-day for the South. The expedition was accorded an enthusiastic send-off by crowds ashore and on yachts in the harbour. Sit’ Douglas Mawson, in a farewell message, thanked the people of Hobart for their hospitality. He declared that the value of the Antarctic would increase with a better knowledge of it. Tho ship expects to reach Macquarie Island in seven or eight days, and after a short stay, she proceeds towards the ice.
