NIAGARA’S CREW
RUSH TO SIGN ON. [BY CABLE—7PBESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] SYDNEY, November 13. The liner Niagara sailed this afternoon at five o’clock for Auckland. A crowd of over one thousand men gathered outside the Shipping Master’s office in response to the call for a crew for the vessel, and a new crew was Quickly signed on. A Union Company official denies the statement that the Company will probably place its ships on articles that will exclude the employment of Australian seamen, following on the action of the Australian Seamen’s Union in disciplining fifty-nine members of the deck-hand and engine-room staff of the Niagara. TANKER’S CREW DISSATISFIED. AUCKLAND, November 14. The men selected to man the British Admiralty’s chartered tanker Nucula, which supplies oil fuel to the New Zealand Naval Squadron, this morning refused to sign on. They alleged that the tanker’s reduced manning scale did not provide enough men to carry on. The dumber of the crew has been reduced by three able seamen, two greasers, two oil burners, and one steward. The men say that to sign on under the reduced scale would be unfair to many unemployed seamen in Auckland. The Nucula was due to sail on Monday for San Pedro.
