GREYMOUTH TROTS
OPENING DAY’S SUCCESS. ,
When steady rain commenced to fall early yesterday afternoon, and continued without a break until an early hour this morning, the prospects rtf the Greymouth Trotting Club being favoured with fine weather foi die opening of its spring meeting were the reverse of bright. At about 2.30 a.m., however, the downpour ceased, daybreak showing a clear sky, with bright sunshine to follow. The attencance when the first race was decided, was good, and a gradual influx of patrons later swelled the numbers. With the arrival of 74 horses from Canterbury yesterday, arW others from Westport and Reefton, the scratchings will be few. When the special train left Christchurch this morning there were 210 passengers aboard. Trains from Rewanui, Blackball. Reefton and Otiri all brought big contingents of visitors, with the result that the streets presented an animated appearance prior to the general exodus to Victoria Park.
Yesterday, and from an early hour this morning, the President, Mr H. W. Kitchingham, and the Secretary, Mr P. C. Heaphy, were at the Park, extending a welcome and the customary courtesies to visiting owners, trainers, and other patrons to the meeting.
Up till the time of the “Star” going to press, the following results were decided: —
