[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] KILLED BY LIGHTNING. AUCKLAND, October 2. Seven heifers were struck by lightning and killed, a brick chimney was demolished, and several trees were also struck in the Akaaka district, during Tuesday’s storm.
BANKRUPT GROCER DANNEVIRKE, October 2
A statement submitted to a meeting of creditors of David Drummond, merchant, Dannevirke, showed liabilities totalling £3741/10/8, assets £lBOO, deficiency £1941/10/8, owing to unsecured creditors £3,431/14/4, and to secured creditors £1509/16/4, the value of the securities being £l2OO. Bankrupt attributed his position to the slump affecting a grocery venture: also to opposition in business, cut rate competition, and lack of capital.
The meeting decided that an accountant be appointed to examine bankrupt’s books, and to investigate transactions between the bankrupt and his father.
JOCKEY ACCUSED. AUCKLAND. October 2
Francis McGovern, 25, a jockey, was arrested in an hotel early this morning, on a charge of stealing at Point Piper, Sydney, between September 3 and 13, from the dwelling of John Sydney Bovili, one diamond and platinum brooch, other diamond jewellery, two suitcases, and two pairs of binoculars, of a total value of £2400. Accused was remanded til! October 9, a. detective saying that an escort was coming from Sydney. - Counsel asked that accused’s name be suppressed, saying that the charge looked ominous, but his client had a complete answer to it. The Magistrate refused suppression and also refused to grant bail. PRISONERS SENTENCED. WELLINGTON, October 2. The following prisoners were sentenced to-day by Justice Ostler at the Supreme Court: — George Frederick Scandrett, theft as a servant at Masterton, twelve months’ hard labour. Joseph Bernard Lynn, breaking, entering and theft at Hastings, two years’ probation, pay costs £l/11/-. and make restitution of £3O in three months. Patrick Blennerhassett, companion of Lynn, two years at Borstal.
Horace Basil Fitzsimmons and Alfred Harold Ibell, breaking, entering, and theft at Wellington, reformative detention not exceeding three years, concurrent -with two years’ sentence at present being undergone. Frederick Emanuel Simmiss, false pretences at Wellington, two years’ hard labour with a warning that he would be declared an habitual criminal if he came before the Court again.
