GREY COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY ■ MEETING At the monthly meeting of the Grey County Council, held in the Council Chambers to-day, Cr. W. Ogilvie presided, and Crs. J. W. Hannan, A. Robinson, J. Ryall, A. Donnellan, A. McDonnell, J. Mulcare and H. G. Carter were also present. The County Engineer, Mr. J. Higgins, and the County Clerk, Mr. M. Keating were in attendance.
The Treasury advised payment to the County fund account of goldfields revenue for August amounting to £649/5/9. The District Engineer, Public Works Department wrote in reference to the pillar rock at Batty’s Hill, for the removal of which £750 has been authorised advising that the County’s proposal for the use of high explosive shells was submitted to the Engineer of the Main Highways Board, and the Chairman had now advised that he considered the best method of dealing with the rock is to employ skilled workmen under careful and competent supervision. Apart from the actual pillar rock there art; other dangerous parts of the cliff adjacent which should be removed while skilled men with ropes are on the job. The Engineer remarked that he would possibly make an inspection of the rock, on Saturday. It would be necessary to inspect the rock from above it before deciding on the method of removal.
Amounts approved for expenditure on maintenance of Main Highways in No. 12 District for the current year ending March 31, 1931, were forwarded by the chairman of the No. 12 District Highways Council. The Main Highways Board advised that owing to reduction in estimates, greater economy must be exercised and that amounts voted must not be exceeded. Further advice from the Main Highways Board informed the Council that the Board regretted it was unable tc declare any additional roads in the Grey County. Acknowledgement of the Council s request, asking that provision be made on the current year’s estimates for a larger vote towards tar sealing Paroa Road, and stating that the request 'would be duly considered, was received from the Main Highways Board. Kennedy Bros., Totara Flat asked permission to lay an inch pipe line across the Grey-Reefton road for the purpose of conveying water to their property near the 28 mile. —Permission granted subject to the work being carried out to the satisfaction of the Engineer. The Town Clerk forwarded copy of a report by Lieutenant Burrell on the proposed Aerodrome site at Cobden N.Z. Flax Investments Ltd., wrote thanking the Council for its action in reference to the survey of Warren road, and advised that there was every prospect of obtaining the necessary authority. Stating that the car used for Council work had travelled 60,000 miles during its four years’ service and the cost of repairs did not warrant its further use, the Traffic Inspector applied for a new car.
The matter was deferred, the Clerk to make a return of amounts received ffiom other local bodies towards its maintenance. (Proceeding.)
