A SATISFACTORY SALE

CHRISTCHURCH, October 1.

The yardings at the weekly Metropolitan market at Addington were of medium size in each of the major sections, and the general quality of the stock was ordinary. Store Sheep: There was a slightly larger entry of store sheep consisting in the main of dry sheep. The sale throughout was very satisfactory, but there was no quotable change in prices. Values were: Extra good ewe hoggets to 23/9, good ewe hoggets to 17/6, good wether hoggets to 16/10, medium wether hoggets to 13/1, ordinary wether hoggets to 10/7, good M.S. hoggets to 16/8, ordinary M.S. hoggets to 9/-, forward halfbred wethers 19/- to 21/-, ordinary two-tooth half-bred wethers to 13/-, merino wethers to 5/3, ordinary ewes and lambs (all counted) 9/6 to 12/-, aged ewes and lambs (all counted) to 6/3.

Spring Lambs: An entry of 52 head as compared with 26 head last week. Prices did not attain the high level of last week, but were satisfactory. The top price was 40/1. Fat Sheep: There was a small yarding of fat sheep and the quality was not as good as at recent sales. There was a bigger proportion of wethers entered. The auction was keen and on an average over the whole sale, last week’s rates were maintained. Values were: Extra prime heavy wethers tc 37/6, prime heavy wethers 26/6 to 30/-, medium weight prime wethers 24/6 to 26/-, sedond quality wethers 22/6 to 24/-, light wethers 19/- to 22/-, extra prime ewes 31/1, prime ewes 22/6 to 26/-, medium ewes 17/- to 22/-, light ewes 14/- to 16/6. Fat Cattle: There was an entry of 340 fat cattle and that total included lines from the North Island, Southland, Otago and the West Coast of the South Island. The sale was very free throughout and although there was no quotable change in values, there was a firmer demand for steers, than at last week’s market. Cows and heifers sold very steadily at prices equivalent to late rates. The best medium weight beef made from 47/- to 51/per 100 lbs., heavy steer beef from 40/- to 43/-, cow beef to 43/-, ordinary beef 36/- to 38/- and rough down to 30/-. Values were: Extra prime heavy steers to £25/2/6, prime heavy steers £l9 to £22/5/-, prime medium weight steers £l5/10/- to £lB/15/-, medium quality steers £l2/10/- to £l5, light steers £9/10/- to £l2, extra prime heifers to £lB/12/6, prime heifers £l3/15/- to £l6/5/-, medium heifers £ll to £l3/10/-, light heifers £7/10/to £lO/10/-, extra prime cows to £lB/17/6( prime cows £l2/10/- to £l5/15/-, medium cows £lO to £l2, light cows £7 to £9. There was a large entry of vealers consisting chiefly of small calves. Good vealers were scarce. Everything sold at rates on a par with those ruling last week. The top price was £7/13/6. Store Cattle: There was a medium yarding of store cattle, with a big proportion or ordinary cows. There were no quotable lines of steers or two year old heifers. Gdod fresh cows made from £5/2/6 to £5/13/6, and single forward cows up to £B/10/-. A pen of yearling heifers sold at £3. Theie were no bulls forward. Dairy Cattle. There was an entry of 57 head of dairy cattle, and the quality was very ordinary. Buyers mostly were only prepared to pay about £8 to £9 flor the best cows, though occasionally they extender their limits for local supply requirements. Prices, generally were on a par with those ruling at last week’s sale. Best third and fourth calvers £l2 to £l4, good third and fourth calvers £9 to £l2, medium sorts £6 to £B/10/-, good heifers £7/10/- t'o £9/5/-, small and backward heifers £4/10/- to £6, aged cows in milk £2 to £3/10/-. Fat Pigs: The yarding ot porkets was much larger than has been the case for some time, there being about 360 head forward. Prices over the whole sale were a shade easier than at last market, but competition was spirited throughout on the new basis of values and a complete clearance was made. Choppers were in good supply and met with a ready sale, lhe total number of baconers yarded was 89. The demand was good and prices were on a par with those ruling at the last market. Values were: Porkers 56/- to £3/5/-, heavy porkers to £3/15/6, average price per lb. .Ld to 10’id, baconers £4 to £5, heavy baconers to £5/16/6, average price per lb. 8d to B?.d, choppers £4/S/6 to £lO/1/-. Store Pigs: The yarding of store pigs totalled 172 head. There was a good attendance of buyers and the sale was brisk throughout. Large stores were in short supply and sold at rates fully up to those ruling at the last market. Large stores 38/- to 53/6, medium stores 34/- to 37/-. small stores 30/- to 32/6, slips 27/- to 29/6, weaners 22/- to 29/6. STOCKS AND SHARES DUNEDIN, October 2. Sale: New Zealand Breweries 43/-.
