N.S.W. ELECTIONS
LABOUR LEADER'S THREAT.
[by CABLE —PRESS ABSN. —COPYBIGHT.]
SYDNEY, October 1
The New South Wales State election campaign is probably the most bitter on record.
There was a significant, development to-day. Mr Lang appeared unexpectedly in the Federal capital, and it is understood that he asked the Federal Cabinet to refrain from announcing any salary or wage reduction in the case of civil servants on the ground that it would prejudice the State Labour Party’s chances at the forthcoming elections. Mr Lang claimed that Labour’s return to power is already assured. Mr Lang then left for an adjoining centre. Queanbeayan, where he kept in touch with the Federal Cabinet’s doings. It is further reported from Canberra to-night that a threat overhangs the Federal Ministry to the effect that any New South Wales member of the Ministry who agrees to a wage reduction will be asked 'to resign, and will be replaced by another who will give effect to the State Labour policy. The Federal Ministry thus faces an embarrassing situation.
