RAILWAY ECONOMIES
COMMISSION’S REPORT
DRASTIC RECOMMENDATIONS
[special to “stab.”]
WELLINGTON. October 2.
Following are among the recommendations by the Railways Commission, the report of which was presented in the House of Representatives this afternoon. Removal of the management from political control, and the appointment of a Board of Directors, having complete control over the whole operations.
Staff reduction, by dispensing with all surplus labour. Increases in passenger fares, holiday excursion rates, and certain goods freights. Higher charges for carriage of mails.
Complete revision of staff conditions and staff itself, so that salaries and wages will bear a proper relation to revenue.
Further writing down of railway capital by one million nine hundred thousand pounds. Reduction of train services on unprofitable branch lines, to provide reasonable facilities for carriage of goods and discontinuance of passenger traffic on some branches, and co-ordina-tion of road and rail traffic. The report estimates that the economies suggested would amount approximately to £294,000. This amount together with increased revenue should assist the finances of the Department to an extent approximately of £028,000 annually.
