ANTARCTIC WHALERS
NEW MOTOR-SHIP’S ARRIVAL. [FEB PBESB ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, October 1. The new motor whaling factory ship “Sir J. C. Ross” reports by wireless that she expects to arrive at Wellington about October 9. After staying at Wellington over the ensuing week-end she will sail for the whaling grounds in Ross Sea. It is believed that she will be accompanied by three chasers. The vessel will load 10n tons of coal for the Mawson Expedition in the Antarctic. The new “Sir J. C. Ross” was launched in April of this year from the Haverton-Hill-on/reqs yards of the Furness Shipbuilding Company. Sandefjord, Norway. The ship is built to carry 20,000 tons, and she is therefore the largest motor tank afloat. She replaces the “Sir J. C. Ross” which was a regular visitor to Wellington on her whaling expeditions in lhe past. This is the new vessel’s maiden trip to New Zealand waters.
KOSMOS IN STORM. WELLINGTON, October 1. Since sho left Wellington the whaler “Kosmos” has been sending daily weather i eports, which have been much appreciated by the Government Meteorologist, and of great assistance in preparing the forecasts. To-day the Kosmos was in latitude 64 south, longitude 372 east. Her barometer was al 25.27, a fall of over an inch since yesterday. There was a north-north-east gale of a force of nine. The temperature was 32 degrees. The seas were very heavy. It is evident that the ship is near the centre of a most intense Antarctic cyclone.
