WAIUTA NOTES

♦ [OUE OWN COBBESPONDENT.] Mrs P. Barrow, a former resident of Waiuta and now a resident of Reefton, was a visitor for the week-end. Messrs Brett, Hart, Gill, Smith and S. Tomlinson were visitors to Greymouth on Saturday. Mr and Mrs R. A. Stewart were visitors to Greymouth for the weekend.

Mr and Mrs T. R. Hogg spent the week-end in Greymouth. Miss M. Cameron, who has been spending a short holiday with her parents, returned to Wellington on Saturday last. Local residents were greatly disappointed last week-end, when the weather conditions were so bad as to make the playing of the match for the O’Donnell Challenge Cup between Runanga and Waiuta an impossibility. A great match was expected between these eld rivals, and enthusiasts are hoping for a suitable day next Sunday, when it is expected this match will be played. On Wednesday last Mr and Mrs D. Cameron entertained a number of young friends, the occasion'being the twenty-first birthday of their daughter Marjorie. The evening was spent in music, dancing and games. A dainty supper was served at which the usual toasts were honoured. A pleasant evening was drawn to a close with the singing of “She’s a Jolly Good Fellow” and “Auld Lang Syne.”

Another very pleasant evening was spent on Monday evening, when Mr J. Young entertained a number of his friends in the local hall on the occasion of his twenty-first birthday. The evening was spent in song and dance, and a dainty sit-down supper was provided and the usual toasts honoured. An enjoyable evening was spent by all. The evening was drawn to a close with the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” On Monday evening the Rangier?. Hockey Girls, accompanied by members of the Reef ton Club, visited Waiuta as tho guests of the Waiuta Hockey Club. The visitors were, shown through the mine by the management, an excursion which they greatly enjoyed. Afterwards they adjourned to Brough’s Boardinghouse, where they were entertained at supper by the local club. The" annual general meeting of the Waiuta Cricket Club’ was held in the hall on Sunday morning. There was a fair attendance of the public. Mr P. O’Donnell was elected to the chair. The balance-sheet was considered to be very satisfactory, it showing a credit balance of £9 9s 3d. The election of officers resulted: —Patron, Mr E. W. .Spencer; president, Mr R. A. Stewart; vice-presidents: Mrs A. O’Donnell, Dr Wicken, Messrs J. Collins, A, Anisy, R. Hempseed, C. Pratt, J Foster, and McNamara; secretary, Mr J. Fitzgerald; treasurer, Mr R. A. Stewart; auditor. Mr 11. A. Ord; committee: Messrs Rodden, Reid, Taylor, Staples, Askew, and Northey; selection committee; Messrs Taylor, Fitzgerald and Douglas; captain, left over till first match; scorer, Mr Staples; umpire, Mr Askew; delegates to Centro, Messrs Fitzgerald, Rodden and Anisy; emergency committee, selection committee to act; groundsmen, Messrs Rodden, Warrick, and Willis. Membership fee: Players ss, supporters 2s fid. Mr Staples was appointed to assist the secretary in the sale of tickets. It was decided to write thanking donors for trophies donated. Mr Pratt has presented a medal for the bowler securing the best average during the season. Mr O’Donnell has presented one for the player taking the most catches. All intending players are requested to hand in their names to the Secretary or members of the Committee for the first practice game, which is to be held as soon as the ground is available.
