CONSUL'S EXPLANATION
[by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]
LONDON. August !)
The “Daily Mail’s’’ correspondent at Nairobi says: Herr Speiser, the German Consul at Tanga, has issued an official statement, regarding the goosestepping incident there recently when thirty sailors from the German cruiser “Karlsruhe” were ordered to march past an hotel because the ship’s officers thought this ceremonial would please, their German hosts. The Consul states that, ho was surprised when tho Provincial Commissioner at Tanga ordered the closing of the hotel’s bar, on the ground that the march past was a military display, which could be regarded as a. form of propaganda among the natives. Herr Speiser called on the British Provincial Commissioner next morning, and explained that no military display in any way had. been intended. This explanation was accepted. Next day he (the Consul) heard rumours concerning his speech, and ho then revisited tho Provincial Commissioner, and protested against such childish misrepre sentation and mischievous distortion of his remarks.
