LABOUR LOSES SEAT.

CHRISTCHURCH, July 23.
The by-election to-day for the Christchurch City Council caused by the death of Cr. F. Cooke, resulted in the return of Mr A. A. McLachlan (Citizens’ Association) 9856; Mr G. M. Thurston (Labour) polling 5824, and Mr C. S. Trillo (independent) 913. The strength of the parties now on the Council is:—Citizens 10, Labour 6, Independent 1. At the last election the parties were: —Citizens 8, Labour 8, Independent 1, and Labour, with the support, of the Independent, had control.
