MEETINGS

AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION

The monthly meeting of the Council of the Greymouth Automobile Association was held last evening, Dr. W. McKay presiding over a full attendance. In connection with the Rutherglen Road, the secretary (Mr. W. F. Harley) reported that, in company with the Grey County Engineer, he went to Paroa and inspected the road. The Engineer decided to remove the side of the cutting at James’ Hill, so as to ■ give better visibility at the bridge; also to deposit the spoil from the cutting near the bridge, in order to widen the road and allow through traffic to pass with safety. The widening of the road at the rail- , way bridge will be carried out by the County Council. The width will be increased by four feet, and the visibility will be improved by cutting away the hill near the railway line. With reference to Grogan’s Lane, the committee appointed to endeavour to effect an improvement in traffic conditions, and decrease the existing danger, reported with regret that one ratepayer would not agree to the Association’s proposal to stop through vehicular traffic by placing posts in the centre of the lane at each end. It was decided, after discussion, to endeavour to have the roadway narrowed so as to allow just sufficient room for a vehicle to pass between posts at the edges of the footpaths, and thus compel vehicles to reduce speed to the minimum. It was stated that one.car was driven through the lane recently at a. speed of from 20 to 25 miles per hour, and the horn was not sounded. It was decided that a letter be sent

to the Crown Lands Office, Nelson, asking that the hush on the PororariMabel Bay-Fox River section of the, coastal road be declared a scenic reserve; also to request the co-operation of the Greymouth Chamber of Commence and the Westport Progress League.

The report to be placed before the annual meeting next month was read and approved. It was reported that the Grey County Council has agreed to form a. turning place for cars at the end of the North Beach road.
