HOKITIKA NOTES
[OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
HOKITIKA, July 7
Foi' several days lately a large flock of black swans have been disporting themselves on the Hokitika river below the wharf. Over fifty birds were counted.
Machinery for carrying out the ditching for the Kanieri Electric Ltd’s, new race has arrived at the station, and the work of unloading has occupied a couple of days. Messrs Clark Bros., Timaru are the contractors. The Town Clock has been out of commission for some days. Mr R. Lynn has the work of repairs in hand. About 11.20 on Saturday night the firebells gave an alarm, the outbreak being in a. five-roomed dwelling in x-ampden Street not far from the racecourse. Although the fire appeared to have a good hold, the Brigade were soon on the spot, and had the flames subdued in a short time. The house, however, was badly damaged. The building, which was old, had not been occupied for three weeks. It was the property of Mr Jas. Hagar, and there is insurance to the amount of £lOO on it in the National Office. Mr Hagar was away in Christchurch at the time.
