SOCCER FOOTBALL

COBDEN DEFEAT GREYMOUTH

This , game was played under wretched conditions on the Cobden Domain. A cross wind blew 1 ight across the field and the players found it very difficult to control the ball. Overhead conditions were wet and the players put up a good display. Greymouth kicked off and Airns handled in the first minute from Tinning. Bailey on the left sent in a lovely cross and Cowe cleared. At the other end, McLean got clear away and sent weakly past, Brown and Rush holding the Cobden forwards. Eleven minutes had gone when McLean opened the scoring for Cobden. Wilson followed with another three minutes later. Greymouth took up the running and Coutts and Mayall kept the Cobden defence busy. From 1 a break away close on half-time, Maughan scored a third goal for. Cobden and the interval came with Cobden leading by three goals to nil. The second half saw Greymouth forwards predominant but lacked finish and their outfield play was just as good as Cobden’s and they were unlucky to lost another couple of goals to Cowe and Wilson, as they had played the entire game with ten men.

REWANUI V. TAYLORVILLE Rewanui turned out for this match, and Taylorville had failed to put in an appearance by three o’clock, and the Rewanui officials thinking that Taylorville was defaulting allowed the players to go home. Shortly afterwards Taylorville arrived to play the game. They waited for half-an-hour and ’then decided to go home. It is expected that- both teams will be claiming the points. / Third Grade: Rewanui 2, beat Greymouth 0, the scorers being Crowe and Doherty. SCHOOLS MATCH

At Blackball on Saturday Grey Main were defeated by the home team by 7 goals to nil. The scores were: Vaughan (4), Bailey, Balderstone, Howden. The visiting lads greatly appreciated the hospitality extended to them. Conditions were most unfavourable and the ground was in anything but good order for football. Having travelled so far, however, the game was staged, but both sides did not relish the sheets of. water, the greasy ball, and the cutting wind. At half-time the score was two to nil, Frickleton and Vaughan having sent through. To effect a save Hignett would have had to spreadeagle himself in the mud for the ball simply skidded with lightning rapidity. A cup of cocoa provided by Mr. McDougall at half-time to the players was greatly relished and the innovation w r as much appreciated. On changing over Blackball put more energy into their play, and combining better, had State defending. Hignett in goal cleared on several occasions, but the ball w r as so greasy it could not bo held. Vaughan 4, Frickleton 2, and McNaughton 1 were the scorers. The Blackball team all worked hard, while for State, Kibble, Larsen, Sharp, Steers, Roberts and Hignett deserve mention. Mr. Neilson ably controlled the game. Matches for this Saturday are: — Senior primary: Blackball v. Runanga at Runanga; Marist v. Taylorville at Taylorville. Junior primary: Runanga v. Marist at Greymouth; Cobden v. Grey Main at Greymouth.
