CHRISTCHURCH, June 18. George Waugh, 55, married, of Sydenham, was found hanging to a tree in Fitzgerald Avenue, this morning. A rope was round his neck, and a bicycle had been used as a stand. FATAL DEPRESSION. THAMES, June 18. The verdict returned at the inquest on Thomas Donaldson was that de ceased committed suicide by shooting himself while depressed owing to illhealth.

HAND BLOWN OFF. THAMES, June 18. Peter Botica, a, Dalmatian, while working in a drain, had his left hand blown off when a charge of gelignite he was holding exploded at Torehape. He was conveyed to the Thames Hospital. ,f

STOWAWAYS IMPRISONED. INVERCARGILL, June 17

At a sitting of the Bluff Police Court to-day, two stowaways, Francis McDonald, aged 27, and Michael McDonald Boyd, aged 26, who were found on the inter-colonial steamer Karetu, were sentenced to 21 days hard labour.

BODY IN HARBOUR

CHRISTCHURCH, June 17

The body of Ernest Smart, aged about 70, and unmarried, was recovered in Akaroa Harbour to-day. Smart had been missing since Saturday, and to-day a part of the harbour was dragged by the police, fishermen and residents, with the result that the body was brought to the surface near the fishermen’s wharf.

VAGRANT WOMAN BLENHEIM, June 18.

A woman aged 42, Phoebe Malzara, alias Garlick, on a. charge of being an idle and disorderly person, was sentenced by Justices at Picton to two months’ hard labour in Point Halswell Prison, Wellington. _ Accused arrived recently from Christchu'rch and had since been a source of trouble to the police and residents.

RETURN TO GAOL. HAMILTON, June 18

Charged with being found illegally on premises by night and with the theft of a car rug, John Ross, 35 years, was sentenced to two months imprisonment at the Magistrate’s Court to-day.

It was pointed out by the police that the accused, who had just come out of gaol, had been on a methylated spirits drinking bout.

WANGANUI HARBOUR WANGANUI, June 16.

It is now definite that the Wanganui Harbour Board will strike a rate this year for the first time. The city and Counties of Wanganui, Waitotara, and Waimarino will be affected. The rate will approximate 3-Sd in the £ in the city, and 3-16 d in the countries. The Board intends to place loan proposals before the ratepayers in the near future for raising and extending the moles. The depth of water on the bar is greater now than ever.

CLAIM FOR COMPENSATION.

WELLINGTON, June 17

The taking of the block of land in Willis Street, known as Nimmo’s Corner, last year, formed the subject of a claim for £6619 16/-, compensation made by John Henry Garrett, restaurateur, and his wife Margaret Garrett, against the Wellington City Corporation in the Supreme Court yesterday and to-day. The property had been the site of a popular eating house for sixteen years. Mr. A. Gray, K.C., for the claimant, said that Garrett, believing the property would not be taken, had failed to take advantage of an opportunity to secure new premises. Then, suddenly, the City Council took action, and it was claimed that Garrett, as a result of the land having been taken, had suffered a considerable loss. Mr. Gray mentioned that the Corporation had offered £lOOO as compensation, but that offer had not been accepted. After hearing lengthy evidence, His Honor said he would give a reserved judgment.
