WELLINGTON, June 17
The taking of the block of land in Willis Street, known as Nimmo’s Corner, last year, formed the subject of a claim for £6619 16/-, compensation made by John Henry Garrett, restaurateur, and his wife Margaret Garrett, against the Wellington City Corporation in the Supreme Court yesterday and to-day. The property had been the site of a popular eating house for sixteen years. Mr. A. Gray, K.C., for the claimant, said that Garrett, believing the property would not be taken, had failed to take advantage of an opportunity to secure new premises. Then, suddenly, the City Council took action, and it was claimed that Garrett, as a result of the land having been taken, had suffered a considerable loss. Mr. Gray mentioned that the Corporation had offered £lOOO as compensation, but that offer had not been accepted. After hearing lengthy evidence, His Honor said he would give a reserved judgment.
