GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLES LONDON, March 28. Shaun Goilin put in an astounding burst of speed at the finish of the Grand National and this enabled him to outpace the leaders in the desperate finish of a punishing race over the most difficult steeplechase in the world. The race was run in the unusually fast time of 9min. 40 3-ssec., compared with the average time for the race of ten minutes.

The race provided one of the most exciting Grand Nationals in history, and it was ’also notable because five of 'the finishers, including Ballynan Wood, were all bunched, instead of customary stringing out, but the remainder of the field, most of which had either fallen or refused the earlier jumps; faded out of the picture in the last mile.

This is the first time that the Grand National Steeplechase has been won by a horse ■whose sire’s pedigree is unknown, but the fact that Shaun Goilin is Irish bred, he having come a long way from Tipperary caused thousands of Irishmen to favour his chances. The owner of the winner-is Mr W. H. Midwood. He was formerly the champion gentleman rider at Shanghai and at Hong Kong. He is now a Liverpool stockbroker and is the Master of the Cheshire hounds. He never bets, but he told his friends that he was confident of winning. It has been his life-long ambition to carry off the Grand National. He has been trying for eight years to win it. He paid 10,500 for Silvio, which was third in the Grand National Steeples in 1924. He gave much less for Shaun Goilin, which changed hands as a two-year-old for only 22 guineas. The winning jockey is Cullinan, an Irish ex-amateur rider. He was engaged to ride Easter Hero, whose lameness, however, put Cullinan out of the race, until Mr Midwood offered him the mount on Shaun Goilin. Cullinan says that it was an armchair journey. He knew that he could win when his horse dashed forward after taking the last fence. The Americans are disappointed that their horse, Sip Lindsay, after going a magnificent race, was not successful. They were also disappointed at the American-owned Glangesia dropping back after leading for nearly three-quarters of the course.

TRACK AND STABLE. NOTES. The next trotting meetinug in the South Island will be at- Addington in three weeks’ time. The Wanganui meeting will open on Thursday week. Commendation won 9535 sovs. in stakes. He was the ruling favourite foi’ the Doncaster Handicap when he broke down. Nathaniel who was second in the saddle race and also in the Turua Handicap at the Thames Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, is a five-year-old son of Our Thorpe from Olivette, and the placings were the first' scored by him this season. It is reported that when the Invercargill Trotting Chib reconsiders the Guy Bingen case some interesting fresh, evidence will be presented. Esbine was the popular tip at the Cheviot Trots on Saturday, and it was a disappointment to many when in his first start ho was beaten by the aged mare Element. However, he was again favourite when he romped home in the Parnassus Handicap and made amends. The ex-North Islander, Flying Shot, in J. W. Jennings’s stable, has done well since arriving at Riccarton, and is expected to do good service for his new owner at the Westport and following Coast meetings at Easter. Shining Light ran into second place twice on Saturday 'at the Cheviot Trots, once as favourite in the Trial Handicap, and again as third selection in the Spotswood Handicap. The half-sister to Hard Words, by Paladin, in F. W. Ellis’s stable at Invercargill, is reported to be showing very promising form in her work.

Lord Thomond’s win at Awapuni has caused him to be re-handicapped from 7.11 to 8.6 in the Tycho Hack Handicap at Timaru on Thursday, but as he is steadily improving the additional impost will not cause his followers great concern. He hks also been'

nominated for Hororata. It has been reported tht unless he lines down he looks to be a galloper liable to tire over long distances. Paquito, Meprisant, Gala Day, and Ranelagh are amongst those placed on the easy list. The first mentioned went sore prior to the Manawatu meeting and was unable to fulfil engagements. Mr E. L. Riddiford has handed over his four-year-old gelding Staghunter to the Trentham trainer, J. McLaughlin, to prepare for future engagements. Staghunter showed a lot of promise as a two-year-old, but after a series of failures as a three-year-old he went amiss, and has not raced since.
