LION v. BEAR
GERMAN CIRCUS TRAGEDY (By Cable—Frees Abbu.—Copyright.) BERLIN, March 13. A young Hon in a circus at Cassel was confined in a cage adjoining that of a Siberian bear. The lion tore down a thin partition, and leapt at the bear. A furious battle then ensued. The owner’s wife, Frau Hassell, who was alone at the circus, courageously rushed into the cage, armed with a wire whip, and she separated the combatants, but the lion then turned on, her, and terribly mauled her. The attendants, alarmed by the woman’s shrieks and the lion’s roars, arrived on the scene, and using revolvers and rods, they chased the lion into a corner. The lion was so badly injured that it had to be destroyed. The bear died from its injuries. . . Frau Hassell is now in hospital in a dying condition.
