MARINE MISHAPS

COMMORIN STILL BURNING. (By Cable—Presii Abbu.—Copyright.) SYDNEY, March 14. The Marine Underwriters’ Association here have received a message from Colombo, stating that all of the refrigerated cargo aboard the Commorin has been destroyed. The mails from Australia are in grave danger. The other cargo is already damaged. The saloon decks of the liner are buckling with the heat. REASSURING REPORT. (Recd, March 15, 10.50 a.m.) COLOMBO, March 14. The Commorin is now completely out of danger, and will resume her voyage on Sunday, taking a full complement of passengers. The extent of the damage has not yet been ascertained, but is stated to be slight. The fire was extinguished late last night. There was a slight list to starboard, due to the large quantities of water pumped into the holds. With the pumping out of the water the' ship regained an even keel.

HERTFORD IN STORM. (Per Presa Association.) AUCKLAND, March 14. The Federal liner Hertford, which arrived from Liverpool to-day, ran into a storm two days after leaving port, at an early hour in the morning. During the height of the storm a very heavy sea crashed on board amidships on the starboard side, and smashed a. number of deck fittings. The top of the wave reached the side of the bridge, and washed away the light screen. The -starboard accommodation ladder, which had been securely fastened to the ship’s side, was wrenched from its lashings and lost. The bulk of the wave hit the boat deck and lifted two boats out of the chocks and threw them in midships. Both boats were badly damaged. Two iron ventilators were wrenched off the boat deck. One of the ventilators was washed overboard, and a larger one was lifted on top of the wireless house. The awning spars and iron rail on the boat deck were damaged. Tho water also swept across the fore deck, and bent and twisted the bulwark rails. No one was injured. PROPELLER BLADE LOST. AUCKLAND, March 14. A wireless message advice from the steamer City of Lincoln that she lost a propeller blade last Monday, and that the accident will delay her arrival at Auckland for about six days, has been received by the New Zealand Shipping Company. The vessel is en route from New York with general merchandise for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin and Wanganui. The City of Lincoln was scheduled to reach Auckland next Wednesday, but is now expected to arrive on Tuesday, March 25.
