CYCLING

' VICTORIA PARK RACES. Four races and two attempts to reduce the unpaced record time for the mile comprised the programme gone through last evening at Victoria Park under control of the Greymouth United Cycle Club. The races were well managed, but a late start was made owing to competitors not arriving at the Park at the time arranged. Results were as follow :— Quarter-mile Handicap. —If. TurtiU scr., 1; H. G. Wilson syds, 2; €'. Corbin 35yds, 3. Also started: R. Kaye 25, C. Keith 30. D. Greaney 40. In this sprint event the back markers just succeeded in getting ahead, and there were but inches between the three placed riders. Time 32 3-ssec. Boys’ Half-mile Match Race —D. Greaney 1, R. Kaye 2. Kaye led in the early stages, but Greaney passed hint near the caretaker’s house. Kaye madd a big effort to catch him in the straight but Greaney managed to last long enough to win by half a length. Time 1.16-L. One Mile, unpaced.—H. TurtiU did not start smartly in his effort to reduce the record of 2.33 1-5 for an un paced mile, held by H. G. Wilson, but lie did the half mile in 1.8 4-5, and finished in 2.22 3-5, thus lowering the record by 3-ssec. Wilson then attempted to regain fastest time. He did the half mile in exactly Turtill’s time of 1.8 4-5, but the second lap took and the time for the mile was 2-23. Boys’ Quarter-mile Handicap—C. Knapp 1, R. Kaye, D. Greaney, Brad-1 ley. Keay, who was off the back mark, finished fastest, but was unable tc overtake Knapp, who rode a good race and won by over two lengths, 'lime One Mile and a-half Handicap. H. TurtiU scr. 1, 11. G. Wilson 10yds 2; R. Kaye 100yds 3. Also started: C. Keith, W. Innes 100, Bradley 180, Greaney 190. TurtiU got to a handv position in the last lap, and had the race in hand on entering the straight. He went on to vin from Wilson by a length, with Kaye, half a length away, third. Time 3.46 1-5.
