STUD SHEEP EXPORTS

AUSTRALIAN EMBARGO SHIP'S TIMELY DEPARTURE (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.) I SYDNEY, December 28. The Norwegian motoi’ ship Thalatta, with 5000 Australian sheep aboard for Russia, sailed to-day. She left only a bare hour before the Federal Government’s proclamation prohibiting the further export of stud sheep became operative. The vessel was beyond the three mile limit, and thus outside of Australian jurisdiction when the embargo took effect. No attempt was made to detain the vessel before her departure. An official of the Navigation Department on the wharf declared that everything was in order, and he gave the master of the Thalatta his clearance. It was ascertained that all but 150 of the sheep aboard were flock ewes. S. AFRICAN OPINIONS (Recd Nov. 29, 11.30 a.m.). CAPE TOWN, November 28. A questionaire answered by > the principal breeders indicates that no centre is perturbed by the Australian embargo on the exportation of stud sheep. On the contrary all are agreed that the present studs are capable of meeting the demands of future development. Breeders urge the Government to follow Australia’s example and obviate helping future competitors, such as Russia.
