LOST TREASURE
A CATHEDRAL’S RECORDS
Loud cries of “Shame!” were raised when the Archbishop of' Wales, the Most Rev. A. G. Edwards, at a recent conference of the Welsh Church governing body at Llandrindod, announced that a loose fragment of the episcopal register of St. Asaph Cathedral and a letter from Bishop Stubbs attached to it, which were lent to the National Library of Wales at Abery-
stwyth, had been lost. The Archbishop explained that he lent the register to the library, and when it was returned two years later the fragment which dealt with the election of a bishop at St. Asaph in 1536 was missing. He did not know whether there was any legal process to have the whole National Library of Wales searched for the document, which was most valuable. It was added by the Archbishop that the incident showed the supreme importance of the clergy not allowing documents to leave churches. Sometimes people called at churches and asked to see documents. These documents must not be allowed to leave the churches., i ’ / . ■
