In the Supreme Court, His Honor announced that a stay of proceedings had been entered by the Crown in the second trial of Dalia Riva, on the charge of negligently driving a motor cycle, which had been set down for Monday. He discharged the prisoner. The civil action of Parlane and another against Dalia Riva did not proceed, Mr Ongley announcing that a settlement had been arranged. CHRISTCHURCH, November 8. “A wild cat scheme. Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine that our organisation could offer anything iii the way of training.” This statement was made this morning by Brigadier F. W. Burton, Divisional Commander for the Salvation Army in Canterbury and Westland, when referring to a telegram from Wellington stating that the Defence Department had almost completed arrangements for an alternative service to those objecting to military training on conscientious gi'ounds. It was probable, it was stated, that such a service would be with the Salvation Army. “There is nothing in our organisation to meet the needs of the case, and I consider the telegram to be a makeup,” said the Brigadier.

Mr Hoover has issued a proclamation setting aside November 11 as Armistice Day, and calling upon the people' of America to mark the anniversary with “appropriate ceremonies giving expression to our gratitude for peace and hope, and desire that our friendly relations with other peoples may continue.’’ MOSCOW, November 7. Partly refuting the unofficial story that the five days’ week had broken down, because families want the same day off, the People’s Commissars sanctioned a year’s delay for a million and a-half workers till sufficient technical supervisors permit continuous working. Meantime, a new anti-religious campaign is ordered to break down the tenaency to observe Sundays and church holy days. The Supreme Economic Council asserts that 75 per cent of the workers will be under the nonstop system at the end of the year, and claims it has already increased the output by between 15 and 33 per cent. The model of the seventeenth century warship Mary Rose, carved from -a block of kauri, presented to Portsmouth Cathedral by a Melbourne resident, Clements Langford, a native of Portsmouth, was handed over • in' the presence of a hundred Admirals. Master John Kempthorne, youngest! descendant of Admiral Sir John Kemp-1 thorne, Commander of the Mary Rose, headed the procession, after which a quartet of Admirals, Jellicoe, , Roger Keys, Oliver and Calthorpe, advanced. Admiral Keys placed the model in position opposite Kempthorne’s monument. Lord Jellicoe hoisted the naval colours, the Bishop of Lichfield, descendant of Kempthorne, preached the service, the first of the kind in an English cathedral.
