SYDNEY, October 26. It is understood that A. J. Matthews, owner of Fujisan, is the purchaser of Aussie and Papatu.
TRACK AND STABLE NOTES. Last October when Cardinal Logan Scored the double in the tight class events at the Greymouth iheeting, he was re-handicapped for the New Zealand Cup. A “Star” reporter asked the handicapper, Mr G. S. Simpson, whethei’ the winning of the Greymouth Handicap on Monday would involve incurring a penalty for the Cup. He was assured that it would not do so.. Aussie, whose sale at Randwick to an Australian sportsman, is reported as a six-year-old bay gelding by Fortifix —Fortune Betty, previously owned by Mr G. Paul. Papatu, the other one sold by Mr Paul, is a seven-year-old bay gelding by Romeo —Gambode. Both have won. a lot of stakes.
It is a long time since a three-year-old won the New Zealand Cup. Indigo, who dead-heated with Warstep in 1914, was the last horse of that age to score, but in recent years not many three-year-olds have attempted the cup. This is due to the fact that owners do not like giving their Derby candidates a hard race in the important two mile race for fear that such a task would prejudice their classic prospects. In Australia, both the Victoria and A.J.C. Derbies are run on the opening day of the spring carnivals, and if the C.J.C. held the three-year-old race on the Saturday it is probable that the placed horses in the Derby would probably encourage their owners to let them have a shot at the i cup. At least this is an opinion that
is becoming more prevalent as eacE cup carnival passes. The big increase in the attendance at last week’s meeting at Masterton was not anticipated. The result was that “correct cards” were unprocurable after the first event, and the caterer was unable to provide refreshments for the hungry patrons even early in the afternoon. These shortcomings do. not go towards making a meeting popular, especially with visitors who have travelled a journey. The Banks Peninsula Racing Club has secured an exceptionally good list of nominations for the meeting to be held on Saturday, November 2. The chief event, the Akaroa Handicap, has a good field, including Count Cavour, Amor, Hoylake, Prickles, Pride', and Malmsley, who are New Zealand Cup candidates, also the three-year-old Meprisant, winner of the Dunedin Guineas, and an aspirant for Derby honours.
In her first appearance as a four-year-old Prodice put up a very pleasing effort when she acted as runner-up to Historic in the Avondale Cup, in which event she was less than a length away at the finish. Historic carried 8.11 on that occasion, and in view of his subsequent win in the Mitchelson Cup with 9.7 on his back it was a good performance on the part of Prodice to finish second with 8.7 in the saddle. Prodice figures in the New Zealand Cup with 7.8, while Historic, who has been rehandicapped, is now weighted at 9.5, which means that Prodice has 211 b in her favour compared with their last meeting. Certainly Historic is credited with being an improved horse since he raced at Avondale, but at the vast difference in the weights Prodice should certainly have the better of the argument if they both, go to the post. As a three-year-old Prodice displayed her ability to run out a distance, for she won the Great Northern Oaks, was second in the Great Northern Derby, and was third in the Great Northern St. Leger. Handicapped at 151 b under weight-for-age, the Te Awamutu-trained mare should run well in the big event at Riccarton. CUP CANDIDATES’ DUEL* During the journey to Whangarei by steamer, discussion between prominent trotting owners regarding the possibilities of certain candidates in the New Zealand Cup took an interesting turn (says “Abaydos,” in Saturday’s Auckland “Sun”). Mr. George M’Millan, owner of Dundas Boy, invited Mr. Wilfred Johnstone owner of Peter Bingen, to stage an exhibition bout at Auckland at the Christmas meeting over any distance from one to two miles, meeting on even terms, with a flying start. Mr. Johnstone suggested eight furlongs, stipulating a standing start, but the owner of Dundas Boy remained adamant and offered the inside running.
Interviewed by “Abaydos”, Mr. Johnstone said he would probably waive the standing start difficulty, and considered that as an exhibition, the match would prove a great draw at the Auckland summer fixture. The club should consider offering a purse of £250. He preferred a mile bout, as Peter Bingen held the Australasian record for ten furlongs, and on a suitable track and good conditions, he thought both horses capable of lowering Acron’s mile record. Trainer Kennerley, seen on arrival, said: “Yes, we will take it on.”. The question will now be referred to the Auckland Club, and in the event of a satisfactory decision being arrived at the bout will add wonderful interest to the Christmas carnival.
The owners suggest that the exhibition be staged on the final day, and are prepared to subsidise a purse for a similar amount, making the total £750.
