, . CHRISTCHURCH, April 3. Weather conditions for the second day of the C.J.C. Autumn Meeting were perfect, and though the attendance showed a big fall'ing-off it was Well up to the average of previous Challenge Stakes days. No fault could be found with the going, while the starting and general conduct of the meeting were both particularly good. Rapier’s withdrawal from the big handicap event was brought about by his going slightly wrong after his concluding gallop. Had he. been included in the field, Nightmarch would certainly have found him a tough proposition. . ‘ .

. Silver Pajei-’s win in the Challenge Stakes was of such a brilliant nature' as to make his Easter Handicap running hard to follow. Despite his poor showing on Monday, Troilus was unaccountably made favourite for the Peerswick Hurdles, but after toiling’ in the rear for most of the journey, he never looked to have a winning chance. Lancer, who was ‘second choice, again lost ground, at each of his fences and, though finishing well, just failed to reach Oriflanib by a neck. When he gains more confidence at hi'S fenceSj Lancer should take a fairly high, place in hurdle ranks, but there is little encouragement about the form shown by others. . i . The. Clifford pair, Disorder and Straight Course, were sent out at less than level money for the Autumn Nursery Handicap, while Erancolin also had a strong following. Blue Metal and Erancolin ,-were quickest to begin, and they led practically throughout. Though she put in a game effort under! her big load Erancolin just failed to reach the other Wingatui representative by a head. Disorder quite failed to reproduce her excellent showing in the Challenge Stakes, while her stable mate was slow to begin. With the exception of Erancolin they were a poor lot of juveniles. Battle Colours was responsible for a. really high-class performance in the YaldhurSt Welter, for though burdened with 10.5 he simply smothered the opposition over the last furlong. Gay Sonnet, who was made a slightly better favourite than Paperchase and Silver Coot, cut it out in the early running from that pair. The leader held her position till the oiltef stand was reached, where Battle Colours, who had been well back in the early stages, put in a great run, which landed him a comfortable winner by nearly two lengths. Papei’chase faded out badly over the last furlong, while Quarterdeck could not go the pace in the early stages. All the heavy investments on the Addington Handicap were for Starshooter, and The Viscount, both . of whom had run prominently on Monday. Amourette soon opened up a useful lead from Starshooter and The Atom, with Swoop Along trailing h er field. Once into line for home there were several sudden phanges. Amourette soon faded out, leaving Starshooter in charge. His effort was a short-lived one, for onqe tacklted by Evening, he failed to put any heart into his finish. After meeting with some interference at the top turn, The Viscount put in a well, sustained run, but he failed to reach Evening by two .lengths. Rapier’s withdrawal from the Great Autumn Handicap left only a moderate field of seven to contest the big handicap. Nightniarch, Beau Geste, and Seatown all looked in nice order, but Pink Note and Hoylake did not please in their preliminaries. All through the betting Nightmarch held pride of place, winding up at about level money, while Beau Geste and Seatown were next in equal demand. Amor and Seatown were soon out forcing the pace, with Nightmarch always handy. When half the journey had been covered Count Cavour Made a forward move and when Amor retired rounding the top he took charge. Before reaching the distance post, Count Cavour had had enough,, leaving Seatown in charge, with Nightmarch coming fast. After a shbrt, sharp struggle, the three-year-old settled Seatown’s pretend tions, winning nicely by a . length. It was a truly run race, and that the best horse on the day won admits of no’ doubt. It was a pity that Rapier could riot take his place in the field, as on Trentham form he must have been! with Nightriiafch at the finish. Seatowii put up his best race, to' date;, but Count CaVcur again showed that his days of risefulness are at an end. . Only four went out to contest the Challenge Stakes. The. backers again Solidly for Silver Paper, with Pink Coat the only , other in demand. In an endeavour to ma’Ke the favourite carry his big weight, Pink Coat’s rider went out from th'e. Start, setting a ve’ty solid pace all round the top turn. He held his position fill thb outer stand rVas reached, where Silver' Paper put Jn_a strong challenge. Though he struggled on gamely under punishment the two-year-old suffered defeat by- half a length. It was a creditable performance on the part of both horses, honour's resting \Vith Silver Raper, trr.-rt

First Money failed to . reproduce his first day’s form, finishing five lengths bebiifd Pink Coat. .... With her weight, Caterpillar was, entrusted with tile public’s confidence in the Papanui Handicap, but the. task proved to be just beyond her capabilities. She sooh opened up a useful lead, apd entering the course proper was right but from Noteworthy, Bery nera, Paper Boy, and Sea Raid. Once tackled . by Sea Raid, the leader stopped, badly, leaving the Night Raid filly .to score. Comfortably from Noteworthy and Winsome Boy; Berhera again- quite failed to produce, his North Island form, and is evidently right off colour. On the strength of his fine showing fh the Great. Easter Handicap, Great Star was backed as a certainty for the Templeton. Handicap,, but evidently his earlier effort had got to the bottom pf him. After juriiping out smartly he headed Meadow Lark and Royal Saxon all through the early Stages, only to compound badly when ’the business -stage iVaS reached. Booster, Who was short of work oil arrival from the South, was evidently improved by his first day’s race, as lie ciit the leaders down a hundred yards from home and won comfortably from Buoyant. Rin Tin Tin got hopeleslly. left, and Meadow Lark, like Great .Stair, could not sustain his early efforts. RIVERTON R.C. RESULTS. INVERCARGILL, April 2.
