U.S.A. MIGRATION

LARGER BRITISH QUOTA. (United Service.) (By Cable—Press Assn. —Copyright.) WASHINGTON, March 22. A proclamation bringing into force one July 1 the national origins quotas of the Restrictive Immigration Act was issued to-day by President Hoover. The clause almost doubles the number of immigrants allowed to come from Great Britain and Ireland, Australia and Belgium, but it cuts sharply the quotas from Sweden and Norway. Lessex* increases are granted to Italy and to several othex' Southerxi European countries but there are decreases ordered for Switzerland and othex' Northern Europeans. The proclamation has followed the decision of the Attorney General, Mr Mitchell. President Hoovex- said that, although he favoured restricted immigration, he was opposed to the national origins provision. He disliked the duty of issuing the proclamation. It is possible that Congress, before July 1, will repeal the provisions of the Act. AUSTRALIAN MIGRANTS. SYDNEY, March 23. Of 96,657 persons admitted to the Commonwealth last year from overseas, 15,401 were foreigners, of whom 5,720 were Southern Europeans and 387 Russians.
