BLACKBALL NOTES

A novel and amusing hockey match eventuated at Blackball on Sunday afternoon in ideal weather before a fair crowd of spectators when the members of the Blackball ladies’ team met a team of youths (chiefly from the Ngahere district). A good hard and fast game saw the local ladies’ team emerge triumphant by three goals, scored by W. Blackmun, Mrs Walker and O. Riddiford to two goals (scored by W. Hogg and W. Ross. A meeting of the local Ladies Hockey Club will take place this evening, when a large number of persons interested in the game are expected to attend. The committee of the local swimming club are staging a further (open) carnival, when a variable programme of twelve events should provide a good afternoon’s sport for young and old alike. The West Coast (girls under 17) Diving Championship should prove an attraction at this gala, and a large number of entrants from surrounding districts are expected to participate. A meeting of the local Baths Committee was held in the Miners’ Hall, Blackball, on Sunday evening, there being present, Mesdames Hutchinson (Secretary), Allen, Naylor and Duncan, Messrs Duncan, Vaughan, Caldwell, Quibell and Hunt. Mr Geo. Brady presiding. Mr R. Duncan’s action in securing the services of Mr W. Gieseking (Greymouth), to officiate as judge for the Diving (Girls under 17) Championship event, and also act in the capacity of Official Starter fox- the various events, was endorsed. Messrs L. Kinsella, and H. Caldwell, were appointed as local handicappers for the forthcoming carnival while Mi- W. Gieseking (Greymouth), will allot the handicap starts to Greymouth and district competitors. Nominations for the various ■events will close on Friday morning. It was also resolved that the secretary of the local swimming club obtain information from the W.C.S.A. with regard to trophy for girls (under 17). Diving Championship event. The programme of vents as drawn up by Messrs Duncan, Vaughan and Kinsella was submitted to the members present and duly endorsed, with a race fox- married ladies added to the list. Messrs R. Mountford, C. Quibell and J. Hunt were appointed official judges, while Mi’ Geo. Brady will officiate as referee, and Mi- R. Duncan (check starter). The various lady members of the Baths Committee will be in attendance during the proceedings. The Secretary was requested to write to Mr Higgins (County Engineer) re an with regard to further information re local applications for a future water supply. The Committee tendered thanks to Messrs J. Hunt, H. Caldwell, Jas. McNicol and J. Vaughan for taking a collection on behalf of the swimming club during the Schoolboys’ Soccer game.

Messrs D. McGregor, Jas. McDonald, W. Jones, J. Wright, and Jas. Hay, who paid a brief week-end visit to the Nelson district returned to Blackball on Sunday evening by car. On Sunday afternoon, Harry Jamieson (age 7) while riding a bicycle near the local Domain, collided with another cyclist and sustained a fractured leg. The boy was conveyed to his home nearby and Dr F. O. Bennett rendered surgical treatment. It is stated that the boy was removed to the Grey Hospital during the evening. The bone has been set, and the patient was reported to be in a satisfactory state this afternoon. —(Ed. “Star.”)

The local Quoits handicap came to a conclusion on Saturday. A. Moore (9) 21, beat C. Duske (12) 20, in the final game. Duncan, McVicar, and W. McGilchrist were the defeated ■semi-finalists. The winner received 30/- in prize money in addition to a miniature silver cup (presented by Messrs Young and Eckersley), second prize 20, the defeated semi-finalists also receiving 5/. each. Mr C. J. Strongman (Inspector of Mines) paid one of his periodical visits to the local mine on Thursday. Edna McDougall (Blackball) who recently underwent an operation at the Grey Hospital for peritonitis is reported to be progressing favourably.
