THE RACING REVIEWED.

(Special to ‘‘Star.”)

CHRISTCHURCH, March 23. Chide’s brilliant track work sent him out favourite for the Hororata Cup to-day, and though he had never previously gone ten furlongs, he was backed down to a short price. He was ridden a waiting race behind till well into the home straight, where he soon had the measure of Gay Sonnet and Thorndale, winning with a lot in reserve by two lengths. Whatever race Chide contests at the C.J.C. Autumn meeting will not be beyond him. Hoylake, who has not been doing well in his last few gallops,, was not started.

Aberfeldy more than made her Trentham form good by defeating Moratorium in the Bangor Handlicap. He was first into the home straight, at which stage of the contest matters looked easy for him. Then Moratorium came along with a great finishing effort, and had the favourite going his best as the post was reached. After being slow to jump out in the Seatown Handicap, Caterpillar soon raced past Sea Raid, and with a furlong gone was in front. From this out Caterpillar just played with her field, and showed such brilliancy as to suggest her winning in much better company. " Silver Coot was thought to be unbeatable in the Brakendale Handicap, the only others in demand being First Raid and Decoy Bird. Jumping out smartly Arch Arrow always had the measure of First Raid and Nincompoop. In the run home Arch Arrow had plenty in reserve to stall off Silver Coot by half a length. Amourette effected the only surprise of the day by putting down a big field in the Trial Plate. He just lastecl long enough to defeat Kentish Lady by a neck. Starshooter, who was sent out favourite, did not race up to his track form.

Strephon led all the way. He was attended in the earlier stages by Loquacious and Jocelyn, with Winalot and Limercik handy. LIMERICK’S IMPROVEMENT.

SYDNEY, March 24.

Limerick’s showing at Warwick yesterday was a big improvement. His owner will probably decide to start him at Randwick next week.

Strephon’s victory was hollow, but the pace was slow, and the stewards censured the jockeys on Strephon’s •opponents, including McCarten, for not going after Strephon. GOTHIC SCRATCHED SYDNEY, March 24. Gothic has been scratched for the Doncaster Handicap and the Sydney Cup. GRAND NATIONAL . LONDON, March 23. Despite the fear that the colossal field would spoil the world’s greatest steeplechase, the Grand National was a successful race.' It js notable that the 100 to 1 winners of both the Lincoln and the Grand National have be-

longed to women. Mrs Gemmell is the owner of Gregalach. She won £13,000. Every horse cleared the first hurdle. Ten horses fell at the third double, and there were about 22 horses standing up the first time round. Seven horses passed the judge, but three others completed the course. One horse broke its neck. There were several bad spills, but the jockeys were not hurt. At the fourth jump the favourite, Easter Hero, was out alone, Sandy Hook and Richmond following. Easter Hero, continuing to jump magnificently, led throughout until the Canal brook the second time round, which he jumped alongside Richmond. Sandy Hook was then third. Easter Hero now drew away, but then Gregalach became prominent, he coming strongly and jumping extraordinarily well, with apparently a good chance of winning. Easter Hero entered the straight first, and led at the penultimate fence. Then, however, Gregalach, in full running, challenged, and 'he clear the final jump well ahead. Easter Hero is owned by the American, Mr Whitney. The third horse, Richmond, is owned by Mr McAlpine. The “Morning Post” states it learns that, despite this unwieldly field, the fu ure conditions for the race will not be altered, contrary to the view expressed by Messrs Trevor and Wignail. The “Daily Express” says that owners and winners are unanimous in declaring that the Grand National is developing into a farce, and is no longer a race. Unless something is speedily done, it says the Grand National is doomed. The race nowadays is not ; even a reasonable gamble. The at- 1 tendance grows smaller every year. <
