HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.)

HOKITIKA, March 23.

The removal of the machinery from the ill-fated Zingara is almost complete. The engines (Diesel) will be used by the Westland Power Limited as an auxiliary plant. It is proposed also to secure as much as possible of the kauri, of which.the vessel is built.

Two questions are absorbing the attention of the public here, viz., the poll on the Saturday half-holiday question and the recommendation to dispense with the nightwatchman in order to procure a motor reel. There is strong opposition to the Saturday halfholiday by the business people, and it is believed their arguments will, be cogent enough to again defeat the attempt. The other question, Motor Reel v. Nightwatchman, is the subject of much debate, and from views expressed in many directions it is evident the retention, of the nightwatchman is desired by a large section of the public.
