The school picnic and sports gathering took place at the Domain on Saturday in. line weather. There was a large attendance of the public ,and it was considered one of the best picnics held lor some years. Those in charge of field events were : Messrs A. O. Langley, J. A. AlcEwin, J. Green, W. G. Staples, I’. H. Jones, J. Rodden, R. laylor, T. Sullivan, and P. Johnston. Afternoon tea, ginger beer, and fruit were dispensed by a number of ladies. Alneh interest centred in the Miners’ ('hop, which was won by -Mr S. McCarthy, followed closely by Mr G. Ward. Boys’ foot races were won by Jim Cooper. A. Brough, Jim Robertson, R. .Pascoe, P. Hagen. E. Coulson. Second places were secured by A. AlcEwin, V. Jones, T. Darby. R. Baird, A. Bright. Girls’ races were won by R. Robinson, T. Paul, E. Stevens, K. Beckwith, A. Jones, AL Jones, and Joyce 'Whiting. Second places were gained by L. Jones, 1). Williams and I. Thorn. Three-legged races were won by Joe Cooper and IL Tomlinson, and J. Lines and D. Short. The ladies’ three-legged race was won by Miss Hampton and Aliss Al. Thorn with Misses Collins and L. Thorn second. The race for a watch donated by Alessrs Walter Bros, was won by Joe Cooper, with V. Jones second. The boys’ slow cycle race was won by D. Short, with B. Hempseed second. The girls’ three-legged race was won by Misses J. Cameron ami AL Thorn. Ladies’, and gents’ chain-stepping were won respectively by Aliss K. Holman and Air 11. Woods. The married ladies’ race was won by Airs Wilderniott with Airs Ellery second. The single ladies’ race was won by Aliss A. Brough with Aliss L. Thorn second. The Aliners’ Race of 75yds was won by Air Wildermott, with Air Hunter second. The Open Race was won by Air S. AlcCarthy, wtilj Air Howard second. The 22Oyds race was won easily by Air A. Hogg. Airs Ward won the ladies’ bowling at wicket. In the evening admission of all school children to the pictures was paid by the Sports Committee, an enjoyable day was concluded by a dance held after the picture programme. On Friday evening an enjoyable programme was submitted by the Kilties’ Band from Blackball to a good audi ence in the Aliners’ Hall.
'The jeturn to glorious weather was very welcome on Sunday, after such a dismal spell of weather. Air and Airs E. J. Allen returned home from Christchurch on Saturday night, and a. number of friends gathered to give them a. welcome. Air and Airs Crowe have left the district to reside at Runanga. Air Thornton (secretary), Air Smith (chairman), Air Leiper (architect) and Air Cole (attendance officer) of the Nelsojj Education Board, paid a visit of inspection to the local school on Alonday morning.
