MINISTER OF RAILWAYS

A BUSY PROGRAMME. (Special to "Star.”) AUCKLAND, February 11. An informal visit to Auckland was made during the week-end by the Hon. W. B. Taverner, Minister of Railways' He was accompanied by the General Manager and the Chief Engineer. On Saturday, the Minister inspected the r.ew railway workshops at Gtahuhu, and others departmental centres of interest in and about the city. He made a further tour yesterday, before returning south. Discussing the construction of the Rotorua —Taupo railway, Mr. Taverner said it had not been suggested to him that the number of men employed should be reduced. Concerning the Government’s future policy with respect to the line, he could say nothing until after the forthcoming inspection by the Ministers, and until the Government had given the question more studied and detailed attention. The Minister will be in Lyttelton on Thursday to open the electric line from that port to Christchurch. The function will be followed by a visit to the new Hillside Railway Workshops in Dunedin and some time later he will return to Auckland to make further survey of railway enterprises here on that occasion, opportunity may also be taken by the Minister in his capacity a s Commissionei’ of State Forests, to visit Waipawa State Forest.
