CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 11. The sensation of Saturday’s amateur athletic championships was the defeat of the New Zealand amateur cycling champion, F. Grose, in all three events, the results being: Half-mile, T. O’Brien 1, A. Mackie 2, A. Day 3. Time 70 2-5 secs. Three miles: Mackie 1, W. Lamberton 2, O’Brien 3. Time 6 min 45 3-5. Mile: Laihberton 1, Grose 2, O’Brien 3. Time 2.13. Other athletic events resulted: Hundred yards: J. H. Murphy 1, R. Cordery 2, A. Clarke 3. Time 10 1-5. Mile:—E. B. Taylor 1, M. McDonald 2, G. Morrison 3. Time 4min. 36 2-ssec 440 yards.—N. Suckling 1, A. Tideman 2, M. Blackmore 3. Time 52j. 100 yards (ladies). —E. Martyn 1, Boyd 2, Hay 3. Time 11 4-ssecs. wanganuFrecords. WANGANUI, February 10. Two West Coast records were broken at the annual championship meeting of the Wanganui-Taranaki Athletic Centre on Saturday night. Purvis (Wanganui) won the pole vault with 9ft 3in, establishing a new fi/gure, while L. Hunt, of Hawera, thew the hammer 117 ft 9in. The inter-club banner was won by Hawera, Wanganui being second, and New Plymouth third.
RUNANGA CYCLE RACE. Nineteen starters, thirteen of whom were Greymouth Club men, lined up for the Runanga Cycle Club’s roadrace to Seven Mile and back. The race proved interesting to a big crowd of spectators. C. Watson had the misfortune to have a spill at the turn for home, when in a good position. Result: J. Devine (3min.) 1; S. James (1.40) 2; J. Doherty (3.30) 3. Devine’s time was 30min 2-ssecs. C. Nicholson secured fastest time 27min 4secs. Also started: C. Nicholson, L. Wilson, T. Howson scr., G. jTaylor 45secs, F. Sadler 1.15, W. James, A. Boote 1.20, H. Wilson 1.40, M. Costello, A. Currie 2.30, Swift, Doig 2.45, J. Medlin 3min„ C. Watson 3.30, S. Kerr 3.45, J. O’Donnell 4.15, H. Wilson was fourth. EASTER MEETING The United Athletic Sports Club held a meeting on Friday evening. Present: Messrs W. J. Joyce (Chairman), F. V. Dennehy, I. Steel, W. Weenink, W. Duffy, A. Grogan, J. Guy, W. Casey and C. Neville (Secretary). It was decided to ask the West Coast Cricket Association to wire the Nelson Association to ascertain whether the Nelson-Coast cricket match would be played on the Recreation ground on Easter Saturday. The Sports Club have arranged a meeting for that date on the Rec. and in the event of the cricket game being played will have to find a new ground or change the date of their sports. The matter will be finalised at the Club’s meeting on Wednesday evening.
