FIRE OUTBREAKS
MINE BATTERY DAMAGED. (Per Press Association.) THAMES, February 11. An outbreak of fire on Saturday at. 9.30 p.m. occurred in the smelting room of the big Moanatiri battery, when nearly th ewhole of that room was destroyed. Fortunately, there was no wind, otherwise the huge three storey structure might have gone. The brigade with only one lead of hose effected a remarkable save. The origin of the fire is not known. The Lucky Shot Company only finished work at 1 30 that day, removing all their melted gold and silver. Everything was all right then. The insurance was £5OOO. This is the last battery at the Thames.
HALL ON FIRE. OAMARU, February 10. At 4.30 this morning an old hall at Duntroon, which had been in a dilapidated condition for a number of years, was completely destroyed by lire, together with an adjoining butcher’s shop, owned by Gordon Sutherland. The origin of the fire is a mystery. VICTORIAN LOSSES. MELBOURNE, February 11. The furniture factory of Wiseman’s, Ltd., was destroyed by fire. The blaze was the most spectacular and menacing for years. Thousands of tons of masonry crashed into the narrow streets and through the roofs of adjoining houses. Two firemen were seriously injured. The damage is estimated at £20,000. A disastrous fire also occurred at Miniyip, where five shops and contents, and a hotel were 'destroyed. The damage is estimated at £12,000.
