(Our Own Correspondent.)
The members of the Blackball Caledonian Society's Pipe Band will journey to Waiuta on February 8 to participate in a concert in aid of their uniform funds. The following local vocal artists have consented to assist in the evening’s entertainment : —.Mrs A. Cairns, Miss H- Openshaw (the four sisters), Rose, Elsie, Gracie and Tessie Rogers; Messrs D. K. Findlay, J. Mather, and W. Burns. The appearance of the Pipe Band in full Highland regalia should attract the attention of Waiuta residents. A dance will conclude the evening’s proceedings. The following day, Saturday, February 9, the Pipe Band are scheduled to visit the sports meeting at Paroa. Mr T. Frickleton, who has been visiting relatives at Blackball, returned to Christchurch on Saturday, en route for the Oamaru district, where he now resides. It is stated tht owing to the breaking of the main haulage rope at. the Roa mine, the employees, about 30 in number, are rendered idle- Considerable damage was done by the runaway trucks Io the main haulage road. Mrs C. Simpson, who recently underwent a facial operation at the Grey Hospital, returned to her home at Blackball on Friday. Mrs W. Frickleton (Blackball) is an inmate of the Grey Hospital. The World’s Entertainers visited this locality on Saturday, and attracted a large number of patrons to the local Miners’ Hall, the performing Cockatoos being quite a novelty to the younger generation of the district. The climatic conditions locally over the week-end have been very warm and summer-like.
On Sunday afternoon the annual general meeting of the Blackball Colliery Accident Relief Fund Society was held in the Miners’ Hall. There were about 60 members present, Mr AV. Bromilow piesiding. The annual bal-ance-sheet was presented to members for adoption. It was resolved to decide the election of officials and committee by a show of hands by the members present, which procedure, in the opinon of several of the members, was a doubtful method to adopt, as Rule 23 will no doubt testify. The rule states : “Right of voting.—Twelve members duly assembled at a general or special meeting called shall form a quorum, and, in the absence of the Chairman, a chairman shall be chosen from the members present. Financial membership shall be the qualification of voters, and each member shall have one vote, and all questions may be decided by a majority of votes except any member demands such question to be decided by ballot. In the event of the votes being equal the Chairman, shall have a casting vote.” An. amendment that a mine-mouth ballot be taken was defeated on this occasion. The candidates for the various official positions were : —For President, AV. Bromilow. G. Reynolds (elected)- For Secretary, R. Duncan (35 votes) elected ; Phil Rogers (18). Treasurer, J. E. Gibson (21) elected, C. Duske (17), A. McGougan (12). Trustees (four nominations), three required) : —James Gourlay (44), J. Vaughan (39), AV. Bromilow (25), elected; G. Anderson (12. School Picnic organisation held a meeting in the local .Miners' Hall on Sunday evening, with regard to the picnic outing scheduled to take place at Hokitika on Friday, February 1- However, after a deal of consideration had been given, to the matter, it was resolved that the picnic outing be postponed until a fortnight hence, viz., Friday. February 15, the Secretary being requested to make all arrangements for that date.. The Blackball Baths Committee contemplate holding their annual swimming carnival in the near future. On Sunday afternoon the Christchurch Musical Party, led by Brigadier Burton, visited Blackball, when various vocal and instrumental items were rendered during the afternoon at various vantage points of the township, whilst Major Bear and Brigadier Burton also delivered addresses at intervals during the proceedings. The miners and truckers at the Blackball Mine resumed activities this (Monday) morning. Rumour hath it that orders for local coal are in great demand, and that steady work should he assured for a time.
The local Quoits Handicap is now nearing completion, several “dark horses’’ having come to light, but on the whole the back markers appear to be well in the running for premier honours.
