Nowadays performers can present their talents in many different ways. On the stage they can be both seen and heard, in broadcasting they are heard and not seen; and in the movies they are seen and not heard. Harmston’s comedy cockatoos, appearing with the World’s Entertainers, crowded all these experiences into one day during a visit to Hollywood, America. In the morning they appeared in the movies; in the afternoon they appeared at a charity concert; and at night spoke and the musical member of tfie “company” gave a tune “over the air.” These astounding comedians from “bird land” will be seen at the Opera House on Monday and Tuesday, January 28 and 29, and a special matinee Tuesday in the exceptionally strong programme presented by “The World’s Entertainers” which also include Jean MacDonald and her dolls, a delightful Marionette act, Manelli and Mack, comedy jugglers, and Evelyn May in a dancing specialty “The League of Nations.” These wonderful vaudeville acts from J. C. Williamson’s theatres will be supported by a strong programme of feature pictures, which includes the MetroGoldwyn special “Twelve Miles Out” starring) John Gilbert. The full orchestra will be in attendance, and the prices are: Circle 3/- plus tax and Stalls 2/-, Children half price. The Box Plan is now open at Moss and Co’s. Be wise and reserve your seat.
MISS K. GARVEN. On Thursday; January 31, in the Town Hall, lovers of music and students of song will have the opportunity of hearing an artist who has mastered this great art by a method that can overcome every difficulty, and enables the singer to float through the land of song with ease, fluency and grace. The method of speaking in many tones —stories, grave and gay, in different languages—is indeed a great Art. According to Herr Verbruggen (now Conductor of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra) very few possess this art, but lie said Miss Garven carried him right away with her singing by creating the necessary atmosphere for each song. Miss Garven is the fortunate possessor of a beautifully rich, pure contralto voice, and has a wonderful range of three octaves with the rich mellow contralto tones throughout. Added to this, she has a charming personality. According to the Wellington “Post” Miss Garven is fully equipped with every qualification necessary for a real operatic star. As Miss Garven is able to give only one recital, it is to be hoped that Greymouth will still maintain its name as an exceptionally musical town.
