HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

HOKITIKA, January 12.
The. Hokitika Borbjigh Council met last Present: TKe MAyor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs Jas. King, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, W. Jeffrips,. E. W. Heenan, A. C. Armstrong, Dr Teichelmann. An apology was received for the absence of Cr Heinz.
The N.Z. Refrigerating Coy., Christchurch, wrote intimating that 74 sheep and 4 lambs were delivered into Hokitika during the month of November. ~ . ... ,
J..Cutbush, permanent labourer, applied ; for •annual leave from the 2nd. to .15th. January, inclusive. —Granted. Mr Jas. O’Brien, M.P., wrote intimating. that the Minister of Mines would topr the Co.ast during this month, and asking if there were any matters which this Council desired to bring before the Minister. The Secretary, Westland Hospital
Board, forwarded a statement of adjustment .of levy for 1929, and intimating that through the Government subsidy being 25/2 in tlie pound instead of 26/- in the pound, the total amount of levy payable by the Hokitika Borough Council should be £738/9/9 instead of £715/17/8. A. J. Thompson applied for authority to iristal septic tank at his property in Hall Street. —Applicant to be informed that the Health Officer objects. Messrs M. Houston and Co. drew attention to the unsatisfactory condition of the footpaths in Wharf Street and in Camp Street. —To be attended to.
The Corsair Social Club, Christchurch, applied for use of Cass Square on Saturday, January 19, for the purpose of their annual excursion. —Granted. A. McMullan, Hokitika, applied for a vendor’s stand at the corner of Weld and Bealey Street, whenever functions are being held in Cass Square.— Granted on usual conditions.
The Department of Agriculture, Christchurch, intimated that amended regulations were being gazetted respecting fees payable for stock slaughtered in an abattoir or meat export slaughterhouse.— Referred to Abattoir Messi’s O’Connell and Caliari, Hokitika, applied for permission to extend shop front, and erect a verandah at premises in Revell Street. —Granted. Hon. Secretary, Arahura Tennis
Club, applied for approximately 84 gallons of tar for top-dressing the Club’s tennis court. —Resolved that no tar be sold until tar sealing is completed. W. Wieblitz applied to be appointed to the permanent staff. —No action taken. The Health Inspector, Greymouth, forwarded report of inspections for the month of December, and reporting three cases of diphtheria. G. Wormington and 12 other rate-
payers, North Revell Street, wrote asking that the footpath be formed from Tudor Street to the Town Belt, a distance of twenty chains, to give access to the houses in that area on the west side of Sewell Street. —Referred to the P.W. Committee to report. The Hon. Secretary, Canterbury Automobile Association (Westland branch), Hokitika, conveyed resolution from Association to ask Council for assistance in arranging a Camping Ground for touring motorists.
The Managing Director, Westland Cool Storage .and Dairy Coy., Ltd., applied on behalf of the Vacuum Oil Coy. Wellington, for permission to erect a Kerbside Petrol Pump in Sewell Street, in front of Mr P. Kirwan’s Garage at the corner of Hampden and Sewell Streets. —Granted, on usual conditions. The Hon. Secretary, Fire Brigade Demonstration Committee, wrote applying for the use of Cass Square for the purposes of the Fire Brigade De-
monstration on Thursday, February 28, Friday March 1, and Saturday, March 2; and (2) for permission to
tap water service connection at Mr Walter Wright’s, Revell Street, and run temporary connection into No. 2 Fire Station, so that visiting firemen can have the convenience of a shower bath after practices, which will be held in that locality.—Granted. Miss .M. Agnew, Stafford Street, asked .the Council’s consent to the sale of freehold sections Nos. 1160 and 1160 a, Brittan Street. —Received and referred to Director for Town Planning. D. Dowell applied for ice cream stand between Bealey and Stafford Streets. —Granted on usual conditions. G. Raine, North Revell Street, wrote pointing out the danger of the sea coming through that street on to his property, also drifting sand, and asking that a barricade be put .up to stop sand and sea. The State Collieries Picnic Committee wrote asking for use of Cass Square.—Approved. The Borough Treasurer reported receipts for the month: £448/15/1; oxpeiiditure £827/13/7; Cr. £92/16/; Credit on fixed deposit in Bank of New Zealand £l2OO.
Accounts amounting to £287/17/3 were passed for payment. The Borough Overseer reported on the work done during the month. The Abattoir’s Manager (Mr J. Jarman) reported: Animals slaughtered during December. —23 cows, 20 heifers, 48 bullocks, 222 sheep, 228 lambs, 11 pigs, 12 calves; condemned 1 bullock. Fees received £73/18/6, same period last year £7O/19/9. A report of the sub-committee appointed to. deal with the electric light was received, the report being considered very satisfactory. it was reported that pipes had arrived for commencement with the water main from the Lake, and it was decided that; the Council as a whole, with the Overseer, visit, the ground on Wednesday afternoon next, finally to decide the route etc. Cr Evans moved that a footpath be constructed on the east side of Sale Street. Some valuable residences were along there.—Seconded by Cr Heenan and carried. Cr Evans moved that the Council make use of the subsidies available from the Highways Board on roads under the Board’s control. Crs Evans and Duff hoped that more will be done in widening Fitzherbert Street. .Cr Evans moved that Whitcombe Square or some other Square, be prepared for a camping ground for tourists and a place for the holding of circuses or such like. —Seconded by Cr Diiff.
Cr Elcock could not agree that Cass Square be closed to all circuses and moved ah amendment that each appli-* cation for use of the Square by circuses dr others, be dealt with on 4ts merits. Cr Jeffries seconded. He agreed with Cr fclcock; The circuses did
very little damage to the Square, and the Council was always safeguarded. The revenue received could be put to ornamenting the grounds. He had heard no ratepayer voicing an opinion against circuses using the Square. Cr Heenan supported the motion, but thought there might be occasions When circuses could use the Square. On the Mayor’s suggestion, the question of a camping ground was separated from the motion. The matter of a 'camping ground was then referred to the Reserves Committee to report on, and the amendment, that each application be dealt with on its merits was carried.
