BANDS CONTEST

EXECUTIVE’S DECISIONS

(Per Press Association.)

WANGANUI, Jan. 10.

Certain drastic alterations were proposed to the marching regulations by the South Island Brass Bands’ Association, but these have been negatived for the time being by the North Island Brass Bands’ Association, it being considered unfair to asl? bands to comply with the proposals, on coming to the New Zealand Band Contest to be held at Wanganui. The quickstep contest will therefore be governed by regulations obtaining during the past four years. The question will be discussed at the annual conference of Bands’ representatives to be held at Wanganui during the contest period. Matters in connection with the Band Contest affairs are progressing favourably, and at last night’s meeting, it was stated that band entries were excellent; namely A Grade 13, B Grade 15, Hymn Test 24, solo entries 494. The selections are the same as those [recently taken at the Crystal Palace, and declared by conductors to be the finest .‘sets for many years. They will be taken in the open air. Advice was received from London that Mr. T. R. Rees, Adjudicator, accompanied by his wife, sailed for New Zealand via Panama and should reach Wellington by February 11, two weeks before the contest commences.

Owing to the large number of inquiries for accommodation, a private accommodation bureau is to be established on the same lines as one in connection with the Dunedin Exhibition.

It appears that the B. Grade music received from England allows for the use of cymbal tambourines, but the contest executive are not permitting bands to use these effects.
