TIMARU TROTTING CLUB.

TO-MORROW’S PROSPECTS.

The Timaru Trotting Club will hold its summer meeting to-morrow. Previous to this year the Club held one two-day meeting, usually in March. The permit for a second day will not be utilised until March 9. Splendid acceptances have been received for tomorrow’s meeing, and good racing should, be witnessed. Racing will commence with the — Claremont Handicap (unhoppled trotters), IS miles. —Blue and Gold, Bon Boy, Gemlight, Decrepe, Great Applause, Great Nelson, North Queen, Pavo, scr., Lucky Voyage 12, Scuttle 24, Kereta, Koro Peter 36, Midland, Aileen Wood 60, Wee Patch 84. Quite a number of those engaged are unknown quantitites as far as racing is. concerned, and the chances of Koro Peter, on 36 yards, of whom big things are expected, Kereta, and the speedy, but erratic, Scuttle, appear the brightest.

' Improvers’ Handicap, li miles. — Devon Child, Direct Red, Doll Dance, John Noble, Otaio Rose, Our Maud, Rose Queen, Slogan, Wee Brent scr., Sunny Bob 12, John Appear 36, Onoto 48, Mary Locanda, Lindbergh 60. This event is a similar one to the first, only it is for the pacing division. All those off the front have yet to earn prize money. C. S. Donald appears to hold the strongest hand with a bracket, Sunny Bob and Lindberg, the latter a winner at Victoria Park. This pair will be the public fancy with strong support coming for John Appear. President’s Handicap (4.36 class), two miles. —Invader, Harold Burwood scr., Avenger, Kotuku Jack, Menember, Omaha 12, General Bingen, Macaranda, William the Great 24, Jolly

Pet 36, Billy Sea, Dundas Boy, Event, Trampfast, Wharepiana 48, Firelight I 60, Author Jinks 108. Of the pair off the front, Invader is the best. He performed indifferently at the Auckland Cup meeting, but that was not his true form, and he may give an improved display in this event. Kotuku Jack reads the best of those engaged on 12yds., and has been showing consistent form, of late —fourth in the Ashburton Cup, won by a good one in Roi L’Or, and a victory in the fast mile and a-quarter the same afternoon. Dundas Boy, on 48yds., has recent form to recommend him, being second in the Ashburton Cup, and won over a mile at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s summer meeting. Trampfast, on the same mark, is leniently treated, as he was handicapped on 4.30 in the Rowe Trot for unhoppled horses, finishing a close fourth, Authoi- Jinks, 108yds., is set a stiff task, and not being too well endowed with stamina can have little chance of success. When the run to the post is commenced those most prominent may be Kotuku Jack, Dundas Boy and the trotter Trampfast. Levels Handicap (3.36 class) 1J miles. —Actor, Auto Minto, Beverley Audubon, Dan Logan, Direct Red, Eiffelton Lass, Forward Maid, Harold Logan, John Appear, Listen In, Monopole, Mountain Ore, Roldena, Vican, Wild Voyage, Young Author scr., June de Oro, Lily Bingen, Logan Brae, Pretty Pointer, Royal Locanda 12, Our Bird 24, Erin’s Lynn 36. Harold Logan, Listen In and Auto Minto have been showing decent form of late, and may be found taking a hand, in the finish.

Waimate Handicap, unhoppled trotters (4.53 class), 2 miles. —Carelo, Kyra, Peter Liu, Quickfire, Scuttle scr., Nelson Prince 12, New • Metford, Bon Wood 24, Avalanche 36, Repute 60, Tim Wood 72, Sea Queen 84, Lady Fan 96, Commander Bingen 108, Len Wood 132, Blue Thorpe 168. The erratic Quickfire is nicely placed off the front, and were he to do it right from the barrier rise it would be hard to select one to beat him. Failing this, the ones to offei’ most opposition may be New Metford and Peter Lin. Pareora Handicap (2.52 class), 1J ( miles. —Bonnie Prince, Macanda scr., Lingfield, Travis Axworthy, Warepa 12, Lulu Lad, Evelyn Locanda, Milo Minto 24, Avenger, Dillon Gold 36,

Harold Burwood 48, Arran Chief 60. Travis Axworthy may perform well in this event, although his form is in .and out. Warepa is partial to this distance and will be hard to beat. Of the others, Evelyn Locanda, on 24yds., reads the best. Salisbury Handicap (4.46 class), 2 miles. —Apex, Beverley Audubon, Erin’s Lynn, June de Oro, Our Bird, Wild Nita scr., lone, Kiowa 12, Becky Mine, Curfew Boy, Delightful, Great Logan, Star Lady 24, Erin’s Royal, Wakataua, Yoicks, Mercury 60. Some good stayers in the making are engaged in this event, notably F. Holmes’s representative, Delightful, who went a fine race in the Greymouth Cup. Star Lady, on the same mark,

and Kiowa are capable of improvement.

Farewell Handicap (2.19 class), one mile.—Bingen Patch, Whizz, Forward Maid,, Gibraltar, Hackthorne, King Abdallah, Roger Lyon, Nelson McKinney, Satinbird scr., Chef, Exclusive, Logan King, Macanda 12, Okoura 36, Royal Serene 36. i. The concluding event contains . the names of some good; per.-

formers, included among these being Hackthorne, Chef and Okoura.

YOUNG AUTHOR CASE.

REFERRED BACK TO CLUB.

CHRISTCHURCH, January 11. A special meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Association was held to consider the appeal by W. J. Moir against the action of the Westland Trotting Club in dismissing the protest lodged by A. Hendriksen, driver of Moir’s horse Neeoro, which ran second at Hokitika to Young Author, for alleged, interference. The Association decided that the question being one of fact, no appeal could lie, but, by the exercise of the powers conferred upon it under Rule 321, referred the mattei- back for further consideration by the Club, and decided that Moir’s appeal fee be refunded. \

Freeman Holmes, after he had been charged with attempting to induce N. C. Price to commit a breach of Rule 286, and in doing so was guilty of a breach of Rule 341, section 8, was fined £25 by the New Brighton Trotting Club. He appealed against the latter decision, and the Association decided that he be informed that there was no appeal, as his notice was not lodged in accordance, with Rules 318 and 319. It was also decided that the fee lodged by him with the notice be refunded.

TEAM-DRIVING DENIED CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 11. At a meeting of the Owners’ and Breeders’ Association, the matter of team-driving, as commented on by some newspapers, was discussed. Members were unanimous that the assertions were without foundation. They considered that the undue interference that sometimes happened in a race was due in most cases to minor mishaps in running for positions in the race or lack of experience in some drivers.

Members thought that the driving in races was as clean as in any racing in the world.

RICCARTON NOTES. (Special to “Star.”) CHRISTCHURCH, January 10. The last of the Riccarton horses that patronised the West Coast circuit are home again, and most of them are being spelled. Footfall is now a regular worker, but his tasks are of the easiest nature. So far, he appears to be quite sound, and Aynsley has hopes of racing him again in the Autumn meetings. Hoylake has lightened considerably as the result of his travelling and racing in the North Island. After a short respite on returning, he was put into work again, and will probably take his place in the Wellington Cup field with 8.1 against his name. The English horse has his full share of

weight, but given a firm track at Trentham he can be relied on to put up a fine race. Returned visitors to the West Coast, meetings are none too favourably impressed with the starting. At most of the meetings there were walking up despatches, which at Reefton, led to a good deal of complaint, and were taken advantage of by some of the more experienced horsemen. First Sight was sore on his return

from the North Island, and has done little work. Under the circumstances, it is doubtful if he will be required to fulfil his engagement in the Wellington Cup. Limerick is gradually getting into racing trim, his exercise being confined mainly tjj steady work, with occasional sprints. His only appearance before leaving for Sydney will probably be in the Hazlett Memorial

at Wingatui. Though Amor and Rotor figure in the Wellington I Cup, some . minor events at the meeting will probably be chosen for them. The Riccarton trainer, H. Nurse, had a great innings with his team at the 'West Coast meetings, securing nine races through the agency of After Ten, Lancer, Oriflamb . and Greyfinch. With the approach of the Wellington meeting, trainers set their charges going this morning, and though the track was not particularly fast some

fine gallops were recorded. Silver Paper, who is engaged at Wellington, created something of a sensation by easily defeating Aspiring over four furlongs in 48 4-ssec., a really brilliant effort. On this form

he must take a lot of beating in the Telegraph Handicap. Limerick was not all out to get over five furlongs in 1.3 3-5, and is evidently nearly at his best. Honour always held Jaleux safe in their gallop over four furlongs, run in 50sec. The former is sure to be a tough proposition in the Wellington Stakes.

Sudden Storm showed improved form by footing it with Childsplay all through a six furlongs try out, the pah- finishing together in 1.16 3-5. Phillipic defeated Agrion over five furlongs in 1.4, and the former can be expected to run well at Wellington.

Full Feather created a surprise by easily defeating such a good galloper as Prickles over a seven furlongs run in very smart time. DONOGHUE’S BANKRUPTCY. LONDON, January 10. The creditors of the jockey, Steve Donoghue, accepted a composition of 5/- in. the pound. His liabilities totalled £33,365, leaving a dedficiency of £16,819* He attributed his bankruptcy to his liabilities being under joint guarantees and promissory notes, and to being assessed, for income tax above his Actual earnings.
