Alfred Allan, who has been missing for some days from the Melton district, was discovered in a tent dead, from .injuries. It is believed that he was murdered, as the gun is missing. INDUSTRIAL PEACE. MELBOURNE, December 10. The industrial peace conference decided to take steps to preserve peace in all industries, pending the reassembling of the conference, which will probably be February next. TYPHOID AND INFLUENZA. BRISBANE, December 10. The typhoid epidemic at Cloncurry is serious. Nearly every home is affected. Two deaths ffiave occurred. Others are in hospital in a serious condition. The heat is unbearable and rain is badly needed. Influenza has broken out in the Charlesville and Adavale districts.
COSTLY CANBERRA. SYDNEY, December _9. There is a regular slump in business at the Federal capital. ,and the adjoining town of Queanbeyan. Hundreds of men employed at the Federal capital works have been put off. The property boom at Queanbeyan, which captured most of the business in recent years, has burst, and business people are lamenting. The Canberra hotels, costly buildings, are not earning interest on outlay. SPEEDWAY MISHAP. SYDNEY, December 9. At the re-opening of the Maroubra speedway to-day, a sensational accident marred the proceedings. J. Spen- , cer’s motor cycle, at the turn into the straight, shot up over the top and disappeared. It careered down the steep outside slope and broke through a wire fence. Spencer was sent to the hospital with a fractured shoulder and arm. The accident occurred close to the spot where Dutton crashed fatally a year ago. QUEENSLAND STORM. BRISBANE, December 9. Rockhampton reports that a severe storm swept Fitzroy River Valley today, 2Mns. of rain falling in thirty minutes. The creeks in the gullies became raging torrents, and a hailstorm in some places added to the destruction. An; elderly couple named McWhirter, were crossing a creek near Farkhurst, when the flood caught their buggy, which capsized. A young man named Richard Bowles, rescued both the occupants, though the old man had a narrow escape, as he was entangled in the buggy, and injured. Bowles then saved the team and vehicle.
