SHIPPING MISHAPS
S.O.S. FROM “PARERA” (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 9. The Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, Mr. McNamara, advises: “At 12.50 a.m. to-day S.O.S. calls were received from the s.s. Parera, which is hard and fast upon Walker Rock, in the vicinity of Jackson’s Beacon, Cook Strait. The vessel is stated to be making no water. There is no immediate danger, and a tug was not required. At 4.43 a.m. the vessel requested assistance, and the agents arranged for the Terewhiti to be dispatched. At 5.28 a.m. the master (Captain P. A. Miles) reported that the vessel was afloat, and proceeding to Lyttelton, and the tug was not dispatched. At 11.15 a.m., however, the Parera advised that if the weather did not moderate, she would put into Wellington. CHILEAN DISASTER IQUIQUE (Chile), Dec. 6. At least seventeen persons were drowned when the Chilean steamer Quintero sank after collision with the steamer America off Punta Patche.
