BOY WITH FIREARMS
DEFIES MASTER AND POLICE. A boarder at the New Plymouth Boys’ High School took possession o£ two firearms on Saturday night, and locked himself in a shed. He refused to leave the shed, and eventually lie had to be driven out by ammonia fumes. The boy took an air rifle belonging to another boy, and an old sports revolver belonging to the school, and some ammunition. He was seen with the firearms in his possession in the morning, and a fellow-boarder told him if they were not given up lie would inform the principal. The boy evidently went away and hid. When it was reported by a prefect that he had not been in for dinner or tea, a search was made. Tie was discovered by the prefect in (he wireless shed. The prefect tried to induce him to leave the shed, but he threatened to shoot, and when the headmaster, Mr. W. H. Moyes, endeavoured to persuade him to leave he fired a shot from the rifle from inside the shed. The police were called, and Constables O’Neill and Palmer arrived quickly. As the boy still refused to come out the police suggested the use of ammonia fumes to drive him out. A bottle of ammonia was obtained and thrown in at the window, to smash on the floor. Another shot was then fired from the gun, but it did no damage. The fumes from the ammonia then took effect, and, dropping his weapons, the boy ran out of the shed, to be secured by one of the masters and taken into custody by the police. He was medically examined on Sunday, and was removed for further observation. The boy was not altogether of normal mentality, but' had never given Hie school authorities any anxiety on that account.
