IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL

THE LATE MR J. P. IRVINE.

The funeral of the late Mr James Patterson Irvine, . of Perotti Street, took place at Karoro Cemetery this afternoon, when there was a large and representative gathering of Greymouth residents, and also, many from Blackball, Ngahere, Totara Flat, and surrounding districts, where the late Mt Irvine was well known-. The chief mourners were Messrs J., and W. Weir, J. Murphy and sons, A. Robinson and sons, T. Colton, and James Shannahan (Christchurch). The pall-bearers were Messrs J- Ryall, H. Carter, W. Ogilvie and G. JJlair (representing the Grey County Council). Among those present were Messrs'J. W. Hannan, G. Harker, J. Brlslane, R. Barrowman, A. Rouse, and R. McTaggart, representing the Grey Hospital Board), P. J. McLean, W. H. Parfitt and M. J. Fogarty (Greymouth Chamber of Commerce), H. W. Kitchingham, C. Kettle and F. H. Kilgour (Greymouth “Evening Star”), A Donellan, J. Higgins, and M. Keating (Grey County Council), J. W. Greenslade, F. H. Denton (Borough Council) W. Clayton (Greymouth Harbour Board). •There was also- a large attendance of members of the Masonic fraternity.

At the graveside the service was impressively conducted* by the Rev. D- O. Bates; the Masonic servipe being read by Wor. Bro. Charles M6ri (P.M. of Lodge Waro, Blackball, to which the deceased belonged)'. ... ' .

At a special meeting of the Grey County Council held this morning, at which Ci’ J. Ryall occupied the chair, a motion of condolence to the widow and family of the late Cr Irvine was carried in silence. In moving the motion, Cr Ryall referred to the interest taken by the late councillor in the riding which he represented so ably- The interests of all parts of his riding had been faithfully served and the late councillor had never missed an opportunity to press its needs on the Council. As a member of the Hospital Board he had worthily represented the Grey County Council. He had loyally supported every activity which had come into his sphere, and the Council would be the weaker for his death. The other councillors present added their tributes to the remarks of Cr Ryall A large number of wreaths were sent in, among them being those from the following :—Mr and Mrs J. Steel, Mr and Mrs H. Council, nursing staff of Grey River Hospital, Rewa Hospital staff, Mr and Mrs H. Carter and family, Mr and Mrs E. McDonnell, staff of “Greymouth Evening Star,” Mr and Mrs W. Morgan and family, Greymouth Licensed Victuallers’ Association, directors “Greymouth Evening Star,” Mrs Meth ven and family (Totara Flat), Messrs Griffen and Smith Ltd-, Fairhall ( andCampbell, Messrs P. C. Heaphy and E. Wames, Mr and Mrs J. Wejr, domestic staff of the Grey Hospital, Mayor and members of the Greymouth Borough Council, Dr J. F. C.. Moore and Mrs Boyd, Ainsley Family, C. and F- McDonald, Mr and Mrs E. J. Rundle, Mrs E. Hopkins, outdoor staff of the Grey River Hospital, Mr and Mrs E. Matthews.
